The reason you can't just use the solder tip is because it contains lead.

Here is what it looks like, with the solder tip removed:



You can see the metal sheath and solder tip next to it.

Does the 454 25w have the ceramic element? That's what Scheize told me to get.

Look for a Hakko Dash. Blue handle, it's the best one and can be had for 30$.
