Smoking it up inside in a rented house?

Hello everyone,

I used to live in the dorms at my college where I pretty much blazed all day long with disregard to the rules. Back at the dorms pretty much everyone smoked so you were hidden by association. You could walk by a hallway and the whole area would smell like weed rather than just one particular room. For about six months from mid-summer to Christmas I blazed out of a pipe in my room. I'm sure it smelled like weed, but when I moved out I just left without talking to anyone so the smell went either unnoticed or unmentioned.

Fast forward to now where my girlfriend and I have had a place for about three months now. We like to smoke pretty much all day, but mostly out of the bong. I'd say about half of our smoking is done outside on the porch while the other half takes place indoors if it's too cold or dark outside. I try to keep the smoking to a minimum indoors because I get this vibe from my landlady that she's conservative, old-fashioned, and would kick my ass out in a heartbeat if she got a hint of weed. She doesn't come over here for any reason, so I don't see why it matters too much to blaze a bowl or two a day indoors.

My question, is how strong really is the smell of weed and how long does it stick to the area its smoked in? I've been smoking pretty heavily for quite some time and I can't really smell weed anymore on me or in a room I blazed up in if I'm currently stoned. Walking from the outside world into the house I can't smell any marijuana whatsoever and a few guests over here have either said they could smell it, or couldn't.

To a non-smoker, what does weed "smell" like? Do dank buds remind them more of ganj, or is it the shwag that gives it away? What about smoking out of a pipe versus a bong? Do you think that if I'm smoking inside, the smoke from a bong is somehow "cleaner" than the draw from a pipe?

Thanks for the input in advance. There's no real rush on a reply, but I would appreciate some feedback from smokers and especially, if there are any, people who don't blaze too often and can strongly pick out the smell of MJ.

But if youve smelled it before it has a very distinct smell to it.

And also, marijuana isnt like cigarette smoke. Marijuana dosnt stay that long AT ALL, whereas cigarettes tend to linger.

They have special sprays which eliminate tobacco oder and a great for marijuana order also. I would reccomend you getting that and just giving it a spray after you blaze to lessen the harshness of the smell, shoudl your land lady pop in a couple of hours/days/whatever later

Marijuana does not stick like cigarette smoke, but it can still pervade a living area. I recommend that you keep a fruit bowl constantly stocked with citrus fruits. After each session, crack open a fruit and enjoy, then store the peels around different areas of the house. You will never have to worry about that pot smell with this method.

personally, i believe that what makes cigarette smoke so stanky is all the tar and chemicals etc. that collect on everything once you start smoking inside a house...

Ganj on the other hand doesn't really collect the same way for some reason. Be it that the tars are different or the collect in your lungs more or maybe it just doesn't have as much as an equivalent volume of tar in it i don't know....but a quick blast of some air freshener usually does the trick.

maybe turn on a fan, maybe open some windows, run the ac, whatever you need to do...


the only time you might have to worry about it is if you know your landlord is coming over on any particular day...if they know the smell of green, they will recognize it immediately if you've recently blazed.

Just try to keep the smoking inside to one room.

The smell can be gone in a couple hours if you open a window turn a fan on and spray some oust or something.

And if it comes down to you getting kicked out for smoking, just tell her you use it for medical purposes.


But everyone knows what weed smells like...if they have been to a concert or smoked it before, which is like 99% of the population, they wont forget.

Just burn some Nag Champa. I've been using it to combat my mom's cigarette stench, and it sweeps away the smell of smoke without leaving any pungent aroma.

I smoke in my room everday, i could open a windows but I really dont need to. Right by my door is one of those air fresheners that you plug into an electrical socket, If you get one or 2 of them in the room your smoking in youll be fine

we smoke our apartment all the time. the smells goes away. the only time it ever lingers is blunt smoke in my opinion. i think you would be fine as long as you chiefed blunts outside.

Man, there's seriously nothing to worry about...well, it depends. If you're NOT smoking joints or blunts ( or anything from paper or something like that ) the smell will be gone in a day. It doesn't linger near as long as cigarettes.

Back in the day when I thought my dad actually cared about me smoking, I could toke up around 9 a.m., and the smell would be gone by 3.

I used to smoke back in the day at my house or friend's houses all the time. After we were done smoking, we'd just crack open a window or something. It'd be gone in a few hours, nothing to worry about.

As everyone said, theres not alot to worry about, the smell dosn't linger, etc etc.

But if you are paranoid of smell regardless, there are several tips to keep it to a bare minimum.

1. Keep the smoking in one room, that is well ventilated.
2. Smoke in places with as little fabric as possible. Or, subsequently, cover the furniture with blankets/covers/sheets whatever, and periodically wash them. Weed smoke dosn't stick to fabric all that well, but it would be a main source of stench permeation. Also find out what kind of paint is on the walls, what the ceiling is textured with, etc. If its anything latex, yove got nothing to worry about. If your ceiling is is a drop down ceiling with those tiles, keep as much air flow in the room as possible, keeping as little smoke in the ceiling are as possible.

3. This one is overkill without a doubt, but it will guarantee no smell. Get yourself a carbon scrubber air filtering system. These babies are heavy duty, and will guarantee relief from even the most paranoid of stoner minds.

Those ar emy tips to help you, but realistically you should be fine with an open window and some air freshener.

to a non smoker, after a while weed smoke can smell just like regular cigg smoke. It smells a little more like "natural".. I can't put my finger on it. I find the gang smell is the strongest when you first light a joint. That first wave of aroma is what I think about when I think of weed smoke. You should be ok.
Weed smoke dissipates, as where sin stick smoke tends to cling to things for extended periods of time.

we smoked 28 blunts in my friends house one day and it smelled fine the next day. just cook some food and spray everything with air freshener. the smell doesnt last long.

If you smoke out of a bong (which I always do) you probably wont have to worry about smoke.

My parents know I smoke but dont approve, and while they are upstairs watching a movie, or just doing something where they are all sitting and I know there is about 10-15 second where in an emergency I can put everything away.

Even though I can open the back door which would let all the smell out I dont (damn cold Canadian winters). MY parents have came down many times after me smoking 3-4 bowls and not suspected a thing.

Imo, if you use a bong you will be fine.
