Official Purple Haze Thread (It's Extinct, Info Inside)

Official Purple Haze Thread

It's officially true now. I posted this in another thread but the thread title was confusing so I deleted that and made this. I find this subject to be really important, we lost a part of cannabis history, we lost the most legendary strain in the world and most people don't even know it.

Post two days ago: So as it has been made clear that the legendary strain Purple Haze is extinct. I have come across many purple strains, and a lot of the times the person selling it will say "It's Purple Haze," because it is by far the most recognizable name to the average suburban teen. So after reading about this recently and looking it up, I asked an elder smoker (was clearly the hippie type) who use to live out in the Bay Area while going to college to describe the high that Purple Haze gave him and he said it was one of the best highs you can get and unlike any other high marijuana has to offer. He had a lot of other great things to say about the strain and he has been a marijuana enthusiast for over 35 years now and he even went as far to say it was by far his favorite strain while he was in college. He mentioned how he regretted never growing it. So this got me really interested, he even said that some elements of the high almost reminded him of a cocaine high. He stated there is a far difference between Purple Haze and any other purple strain. So as I have mentioned in another thread, I do know a professional grower and I am going to ask him about this and see what information he has to offer and I'll post up what he says. I'm really interested in finding this strain or maybe even giving someone the idea to bring it back some how.

Today: Well I asked him yesterday and he confirmed that the strain is indeed extinct.

No, no. There is a far difference between any regular purp and Purple Haze. There are a lot of purple strains and Purple Haze was one of them. Thing is Haze's aren't popular strains amongst growers, it is a low yielder and takes long to flower and that is probably one of the reasons why it is extinct. Sad thing is, we lost a legendary strain that had a very unique high that you won't find in any other strain. It's high was not like that of any other high marijuana had to offer.

isnt there also a difference between being extinct and being uncommon?

surely plant species that were once thought extinct do occasionally pop up.

this isnt too offical :-\ i was kinda hoping for facts or something like; not word of mouth lol

Well I asked a professional grower, an expert in his field and it's his job and passion. He knows what's going on and he confirmed the strain is extinct.

you guys the "original" purple haze like the hendrix purple is definitly extinct. It was probably a good high but I think "cocaine-like" might be a bit of an overstatement it is too bad though that it's been lost... there are many other plants like this out there though such as Asain Fantasy which may become extinct because of greedy hoarding people it's a sad world guys.

It's *nearly* extinct, but a few people do have the old haze seeds and are working on preserving it.

Unfortunately I can't find the original thing Sam the Skunkman wrote anymore (I hate it when a thread goes in the "archive" and you can't remember what it was called), but yeah. Haze was composed of random bagseed genetics, handpicked by the Haze Brothers. Because the make-up was so diverse (Thai, Mexican, Colombian, Brazilian, Jamaican, etc.), there were many phenos, and the Haze Bros. classified their product based on color. Green Haze, Silver Haze, Gold Haze, and yes, Purple Haze, which cost the most (but Sam the Skunkman said it was inferior to some of the others).

You're not going to find it in Dutch Haze because that's completely homogenized, but I know Hothouse Flowers used to carry some really old Haze seeds which did contain purple phenotypes (along with all the other less famous ones), and I'm pretty sure some other obscure-ish seedbanks have it too. You can also find the odd auction on seedbay for 'em.

So no, it's not extinct. Will you find it on the street? Probably not. Most of the "Purple Haze" is either some no-name purple indica, or a different kind of purple sativa grown in the Florida greenhouses (this is the purp haze that they get in NYC, or so I've heard).

Really though it doesn't really matter. It's just a goddamn name, there are plenty of great sativas which are *more* intense than purple haze. People just think it's the BEST SHIT EVER because it's "extinct"/rare, but it's just another sativa hybrid, just like Kali Mist and Arjan's Ultra Haze.

Sorry I can't provide more sources. I did in my other Purple Haze thread, but the link is dead now.

Juat adding a little tidbit to this. The Hendrix purple haze wasn't about weed at all. During that time there was a kind of LSD known as Purple Haze. Listen closely, he is describing LSD perfectly.

Anybody know what strains have the qualities that we would need to bring it back?

To get a good strain it takes a lot of selective breeding and time. Lots of both. It would be quite hard, nearly impossible, to create the same strain. Atleast I think it would be.
