Jman's guide on how NOT to get caught smoking in your room/dorm/whatever

I've seen a lot of threads and posts about this and I see the same set of dumb answers.

There are a few definitive things you can do to set up most rooms to be "smell proof."

Let me first go over some things that do not work or work poorly and will get you caught:

1: sploofs

I'm addressing these first since people always suggest them as a good way to mask smell. ANY masking device is generally a bad idea, and these things don't even do a very good job of it. Sploofs or whatever you want to call them are any variation of a tube stuffed with dryer sheets or some other scented material.

The idea is you exhale though the sploof and it ends up smelling like flowers. The reality is is that it smells like marijuana smoke that just went though the laundry.

2: fabreeze, ozium, whatever spray you want to use

Self explanatory, some of these work better than others but none work that well at all and whatever fancy odor killing technologies the products advertise they still just mask the smell for the most part. A can of something liek this might be useful to have around but definitely should not be your main solution.

3: incense

Just don't burn them if you are trying to be discreet in any way. They generally are very strong and the smell leeches everywhere and gets on everything. I've tried every method there is, and this tends to get people caught a lot. Even if no one smells weed, as soon as that incense smell gets into the hallway everyone notices it and it is no secret people try to mask smoke with them.

4: cologne and other perfumes

Same deal as incense and other masking devices.

5: Other methods: i'm sure i'm forgetting a bunch here but i'll add them later if you can think of them. burnt popcorn tends to be a popular masking odor.

Just off the top of my head- "ghosting" hits is generally a bad idea. some people say it gets rid of the smell but it is bad for you and you will still exhale some smoke that smells. THC gets absorbed in seconds, no need to kill your lungs holding smoke in for thirty seconds.

now here are a couple common methods that are on the right track but still not well thought out and perfect.

1: toweling your door

A good step in the right direction. Will help to keep smoke inside the room, but relying on it alone is taking a big risk.

2: smoking by an open window

Also a step in the right direction. The ultimate goal is to not have any smoke in the room or have it cleared out in seconds.

3: smoking with a fan blowing out the windowFinally you are starting to think! The faster and more efficiently you can get smoke out of the room the better.


4: vaporizers Yeah, they work and don't smell as much, but they do still smell and you want to take the same precautions as if you were smoking. Plus lets face it, vapes aren't very fun. I rarely use my volcano.


Now what is the best solution?

The absolute key to not getting caught is to exhaust all the smoke as fast and efficiently as possible while making sure the room is sealed and no air is leaving it any way but exhausted outside.

first take a look around your room and specifically the windows and door frame. Test to see which way air flows into the room by closing the door and holding a lighter underneath and also around the frame. unless sealed, quite a bit of air will move through the doorframe which a towel won't help you with. The ideal situation is that air naturally flows from outside in the hallway INTO your room. This means fresh air is always coming in and air from your room is never flowing back out. Test around the door frame with the windows open as well as closed.

Also take a look around for any air vents (intake vents are all you need to worry about), smoke detectors, or anything else that might be a problem. I know in one dorm situation I had a shared wall and there was a gap where the wall met the window and air could pass through. Guy next door always knew when i was smoking and I could always tell when he was even when the hallway didn't smell at all....

For smoke detectors, just cover them. a plastic bag over one with tape all around work fine. You would need to blow a hit into most of them to set them off but it is better to just be safe.

Now if air naturally flows into the room from the hallway you still want to have an exhaust fan blowing out the window. a big box type fan is best, even two are a good idea just to be sure. you could open the door five seconds after taking a bong rip and the person outside would have no idea you just smoked. Press the fan as close to the window/screen as possible.

After you have your exhaust fan blowing out check again with a lighter around the door frame to make sure air is blowing in. I have found that if the bottom of the door is sealed then air is more likely to come in around the frame the way you want. in some cases when the bottom of the door is left open it is variable or blows out.

so, for this reason it is still important to seal the door as needed. sealing the bottom is usually sufficient and allows some air into the room from the hallway through the frame. I suppose you can use a towel, but it is a pain to put in place every time and still not as good as some of the much better solutions. They do make products to seal doors, and you can pick up one that works great for $3 from home depot. The one I use is a Frost King Self Stick Door Sweep. very easy to install, just stick it on the bottom of the door. you can get more elaborate ones, but this is cheap and works fine and is good if you don't want to damage the door at all.

If you want to seal around the door frame to completely seal the room off, you can buy a variety of stick on products as well. They sell all sorts of foam, rubber, and vinyl sealing tapes you can stick on the frame easily.


That is basically all you need to know about how to smokeproof any room pretty well.

cliffs:
-don't mask the odor of smoke, get it out of the room all together
-with $20 you can go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy a box fan, stick on door sweep, and maybe some door frame sealing tape and you can smoke with a little more peace of mind.

cool i would also like to add, have a weed bag, like a shopping bag, but all weed related things go in it, anything and everything. then take it out once a moth and your straight about leaving shit around your room.

Yeah general safety about having stuff lying around is important as well. Keep all pieces spotless when possible. Keep everything locked up when sealed and not out in the open. A clean piece is a legal piece. They look nicer and hit better spotless as well.

2. open a window and turn on a fan to blow out the smoke.

Best way to smoke in a dorm room. IS TO NOT SMOKE INSIDE THE DORM AT ALL. The advice you are giving might be good, but there are always people walking around, if someone doesnt see the smoke or smell the smoke out of the window then he/she will be lucky. You never know what small crack in the room might let odor into another room or what not. Dont risk getting kicked out of the dorms with no refund or even kicked out of the college. Best way for college is to just have a pipe or papers and go outside to a nice local and do it. There are no curfews in college, you can go out and in whenever the hell you want. Only thing id suggest if you have gay RAs or front desk people is to avoid the main entrance, just use a side door.

If your at home, id say just wait till people start going to sleep and then just ninja outside and go for a small walk while you smoke a jay, or go somewhere and sit down and smoke your pipe. Best way to find a nice local to smoke is to first do recon at night. Just walk by and see how far you can see, if you have a buddy have one of you run to that area and spark the lighter, see if he can see it or how far back you have to be. Just be smart about it, even use your car to see how far the lights go(use buddy system again) and how far you can see so when your there you will be 100% sure you cant be seen. If you are living in a house that you dont own/pay rent for then I advise NOT smoking inside.

Well this is obvious. By smoking anywhere you are taking a risk. I personally believe that a well setup room is safer than walking around on a campus looking for a public space to smoke in.

You can control your environment in a closed room, you don't know who is around or what can happen in public. Police patrol most campuses and cities regularly. I've heard of cops patrolling dorms at some schools, but not here. I've had one close call before, and that was with a cop while smoking on campus outside but it was a cigarette shaped bat so i played it off as a cigarette and kept walking. With a properly set up room i've opened the door for an RA thirty seconds after taking a bong rip with him never being the wiser. speaking of bong rips, try going on a walk with a roor.

Nice! Thats pretty sweet. Up here we have NAU police and they really dont do a whole lot, cause at night here its nice to walk around so alot are doing it. Real cops dont do a whole lot near campus but there have been some close calls.

I guess my main point was if your smart about it there shouldnt be a problem lol.

Exactly, the point of this thread is to educate people on how to do it smartly instead of learning by trial and error or figuring out the hard way.
