6 things to think about before buying a new bowl

When I'm about to purchase a new bowl, here are some things i think about to make sure i make the right choice. Now, of course, what the bowl looks like is gonna be up to you, colors, inside out, etc. These are just some things i think everyone should think about before purchasing.

1. Thickness of the piece.
I have 2 bowls that get real hot after 1 or 2 bowls have been smoked through them because the glass isnt the thickest. Spend the extra money on a thicker piece, its worth it in the long run.

2. Size of the bowl/hole
i like a smaller bowl cause i hit my shit alone a lot of the time and dont need to pack party bowls. If you smoke with several friends most of the time, you might want a bigger bowl so you dont have to constantly load them. I also look at the hole in the bottom of the bowl to see how big it is. I like to have a bigger hole in my bubblers, but in my dry pieces i like to have a smaller hole. It just determines the ease of the suction on a bowl.

3. What the inside of the piece looks like
I like to have the inside of my piece wide open, by this i mean that i dont want any little spaces in there that resin is gonna build up in and clog the suction. Ive seen a bad ass thick spoon where the shaft of the pipe was twisted and the inside of it was just a small path from the bowl to the mouth. After several uses, it was already clogging up inside and making it hard to hit, so thats why i like it wide open in there.

4. The mouthpiece
Looking at the mouthpiece, is it thick? is it thin? how big is the hole? Is the mouthpiece lip friendly? I had a bowl where the mouthpiece was like a small hole in the bottom of a glass, your lips didn't form around the end of the bowl, its like your kissing the bottom of a glass. It sucked. Find a comfortable mouthpiece, you're gonna be kissing it for a while.

5. Location/size of carb
I bought a piece that had the carb on the right side of the bowl, i always hold the bowl with my left hand and am used to having my thumb on the carb so this wasn't the most comfortable IMO. Ive also used bowls that had very small holes for the carb and they were a bitch to clear. It felt like having your thumb on or off the carb didn't make much of a difference, it was still tough to pull.

6. Impurities in the glass
Last but not least, are there any bubbles or cracks in the bowl? Ive seen a lot of bowls in head shops that have small bubbles in them, IMO that looks like shit. If it doesn't bother you then go for it, I'm just kinda anal about those types of things.

I hope this has helped anyone looking to buy a new bowl.

i know this is an extremely stupid question, but is it considered extremely rude to put the bowl slightly up to your lips to see if its comfortable before buying? even if you whipe it off and stuff?

I mean because of rule number 4...

good question, i dont know, ive done it at a couple head shops and they didnt care. Hell take a hankie with you to cover the mouthpiece and then put your mouth on it.

soak your bowl in rubbing alcohol for an hour in a ziplock baggie. After the hour is up, add a gang of salt, seal the ziplock and shake like hell. Your bowl should be clean after a minute or 2 of shaking. Rinse with hot water, and presto!

All the shops near me have signs that say "You lip it, you buy it."
