Of course there are MANY variables in making a smoking device.
It's all up to your personal needs/tastes.

My Pipe:


A 301F Zebra Pen Casing - Stem (Flawless)
A mechanical pencil's gripping - Rubber Grip (Heavy Duty)
A Full metal pen cap, inverted and inserted - Bowl (Sized Exact)
And the mouthpeice is some nifty looking thing I once found on the ground.

My Tabletop Bong:

Made from hot glued sections of medicine bottles that have been cropped to size.
The Stem is made from another 301F Zebra Pen Casing.
The bowl on this is the same as my pipe.
There is a grey Pencil grip used as an airtight seal and stopped around the stem.
The carb was placed on the back, simply by driving the hotglue gun into it. and cleaning up the edges.
This bong rules.

My Favorite Bong:

Made from a Parmisian cheese container fused to a 1 liter pepsi bottle top.
The Female stem on this section of the bong is made from a plastic pen tube. (Will not melt here)
The Male stem is a section of antenna, cropped from an old TV antenna.
The male stem is hotglued to the ash-catcher, made from a medicine bottle. (Those nifty bottles)
The Main Stem is attached to the cap of the medicine bottle, and is made from a slightly large metal pen casing.
There is a small peice of rubber fitting perfectly around the main stem as an airtight failsafe.
The cap is able to be removed, for cleaning and refilling, and is airtight when closed.
The last peice here is the bowl. A CO2 Cartridge filed to size.

My Advice:

Don't use anything that's going to melt in close range of the bowl and main stem.
Make sure to test all meterials for rusting potential before using a bong!
Air-tightness is supreme. Nothing will suffice if it has a bad air-leak.
Avoid using the ghetto pebble screen. There are air pockets in them that can explode. I know first hand.
Tape is second to hot-glue and silicone caulking. Tape causes air-leaks, in time if not at first.
You should make a design that can be cleaned from the bowl to the mouthpeice.
Seperability is a good thing for smoking devices of all kinds, for maintinance and repair.
When a peice can be seperated, it can be replaced. And keeping a device working pays off with resin delight.
With a little creativity anything on this earth can be a smoking device.

That last bong looks perfect. Air tight, nice size, plus an ash catcher.

ya i thought no one knew about the Zebra pens but i guess i was wrong. those things are great. did you know that you didnt need another bowl you can use the tip on the pen and its a perfect fit. theres a little hole on the end but if you keep your bud a little big(like little nugs) your all good for a nice little sneak-a-toke

i clean some.... depends... my acrylics i clean... my glass homeades i clean... my plastic ones and my honeybears i dont do more then hot watter and pipe cleaners....
