Dome percs create a lot more drag than the tree percs, thereby making them more difficult to clear. Several of the tree percs (i.e. lux, KC) have 4 arms on the tree, with each arm being diffused. Diffusers are nice because they make the smoke bubbles in the water smaller, meaning a greater percentage of the smoke has come into contact with the water, making for a cleaner, smoother hit. With those diffused arms in the perc, not only are you getting your smoke cleaned a second time, but a diffused second time, which will all but completely eliminate any coughing you might experience. With those tree percs, it's all about the smoothest hit possible with the least amount of drag.
