Well I wanted to take some pictures of our kief harvest the other night. I only ended up shaking about half of my batch as I owe some kief to a friend... but the results were decent enough for a good evening of kief coated bongrips. there is a video I've seen that illustrated this process with a special shaker can... I have devised another method of collection.
*if you have no idea what I'm talking about, just think back to that inevitable day in any stoners life when you look at the dank stems and wish you could some how utilize the resin that coats them. You might hear of the infamous Green Dragon, or even stem tea, but I don't fancy either one of those.
First, you will need to gather supplies. my massive roll of masking tape, my 4-part grinder, a medium medicine bottle, and the collected stems in the shotglass. Also, some kind of tool for scraping kief from the bottom will be needed. I use a guitar pick that I cut a flat edge on... just find something that works.
For each shaking, you dont want too many stems in the jar... no more than a third of the way full to allow for complete shaking action. I usually drop the guitar pick in with the stems to add some abrasive power.
Here is where you may need to improvise. the rim of the jar I use fits perfectly into the bottom of the grinder -- the threaded part that the kief tray screws into. If you pop the screen the opposite way and screw the collection tray into the other side, you should have something like this.
Now, you'll want to tape the grinder down onto the bottle, just to hold it secure for the next 5 minutes or so. This is your shaker:
For this amount of stems, about 5-8 minutes of shaking should be all you need. You want to keep the shaker in this vertical position throughout the shaking. Dont want any of that kief to go right back through the screen, do you.
I generally pack a small snap of herb, then put a dome of kief ontop. Something like this should do;
The yield may not seem like much, but I always end up with enough to cover every bowl I smoke for the following day, at least. Some have suspected this to just be a way of gathering stem dust, containing little THC. This is most definitely potent kief, and all I can say is that you need to try it before making any judgment.
Please enjoy, and I appreciate any
constructive feedback.
