Vaporizing bud with a lighter.

Is it possible? could you get the same affects you get vaporizing bud, by holding a lighter above the bowl and not leting the bud catch on fire//I just pulled out a small bud that was loaded with tiny crystals and hit it in my glass bowl with the flame held above the bud. It was actually pretty cool to watch while hitting I watched it turn brown , without catching on fire. So I guess my question is, Does this work the same as a vaporizer? And if it does, why not do that instead of buying one?

Well hmmm... I guess since its getting hot but not actually lighting, its same very basic idea as a vaporizer. I would say that kind of works, but you don't have something to keep all of the vapors like a vaporizer does. It sounds like it could work, but you are probably loosing some vapor, just like you would loose some smoke. Ah, I dont know. I just know I want a real vaporizer asap.

well I guess if you keep hitting on it while your trying to heat it up, and for a little bit after you take away the lighter, I guess that wouldnt happen. I'm still just going to get a vaporizer ASAP. The two I've found that are pretty cheap and like the one I used last night are:

I don't really trust myself to do it your way. Especial after im baked, heh. Did you try just using that, to see if you got high? The main reason I want a vaporizer is so I can smoke in my room. Shadware if you just want a vap for room blazing theres always the el-cheapo lightbulb vaperizor. Just take off the metal and hollow and clean it out. then throw some shake in and heaty underneath the bulb

ok. use a knife to cut away the metel on the lightbulb, be careful not to break the lightbulb, after you get it all off, break th eglass out of the middle of the bulb,, so it open, then use water to wash all the white shit out, and then you can leave a bit of water in it, to help make the hits smoother even. Add your pot and heat it up and you will se it get hazy in the lightbulb, no smoke, if you see actual white smoke, you got it too hot. but it will get hazy, then use a pen tube ot straw or somehting to suck it all out.

Okay, I'm a little confused, do you use a bowl or just throw the bud in the bottom of the bulb(with the little bit of water?!?!?!?!), and how do you not let the smoke escape cause I'm sure it's gonna expand - do you cap it off or something? And how long should it take to get the vapor from the heating of the bulb?

ok, yes, just drop the weed down into the bottom of the bulb, you can use a paper towel or something to cap off the end, it doesnt take very long for the vaper to fill the bulb, remember, it dont smoke, just gets a bit hazy, then stick a pen tube or little hose into the bulb about halfway, and inhale as much as you can and if its still making "haze" cap it off till you exhale, hold it as long as you can.

And dont really add any water, but after you wash the bulb out, and dry it with a paper towel or something, its ok to leave a tiny amount inside the bulb, I mean thin bits on the sides and stuff.. and just use a lighter under the weed..
after you light it and it starts to get hazy in the bulb, shake it a bit to make it go faster.. and to turn the pot around a little.

Use the jamjar method

It's what I have been doing, (the guide I used to do it is below), I also found using a Zippo lighter is much better than a normal one because it gets hotter and you don't need to hold the button down, candles are supposed to be the best though I havn't tried with one yet.

I have been getting great results using a jam jar to vaporise my pot.
Here's how...

NOTE: BE CAREFULL - BELOW ARE JUST MY FINDINGS AND I'M JUST A NOBODY. I HAVE NOT YET RECEIVED ANY SERIOUS INJURYS BUT BE CAREFULL. AND YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK - YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN ACTIONS.

Remember... the beauty of this is that it produces next to no smell and is better for you than smoking (look it up on the net if you don't believe me).
Also burning destroys THC, vaporising releases it so your pot will give you much more hit for your money.

WARNING1!!! - The glass gets very very hot and you may well burn yourself if you do not take care (I did and it hurts like hell).

WARNING2!!!: It's not happened to me but the glass jar may explode if over heated and you could end up with glass in your face and eyes. Be very careful.

Anyway here's how:

1. Get hold of a glass jam jar preferably not to big so you can get in it with your fingers to clean it (WHEN IT'S COOLED OFF A BIT) and retrieve stray bits of pot. Make sure the jam jar is clean and dry.

2. Take off the lid and put in some pot - grass or solids.
For grass grind it up as fine as you can get it.
For solids heat and crumble it as you would for a joint again getting it as fine as possible.
I find a thin layer about 10mm x 10mm and upwards good.
Do not put too much in because then it will pile up on top of itself and not heat evenly.

3. Put the lid on the jar turn the jar on its side and shake and tap the glass to gather the pot into a nice localised area with as much as possible of the pot touching glass.

4. Hold the jar horizontally and hold the lighter flame about an inch (25mm or so) beneath the jar where the pot is gathered. Try to slowly move the flame around to evenly heat the gathered pot.
(NOTE: Do not put the flame directly on to the glass. This will generate much soot and mess and makes it harder to control the heating. Just be patient!)

5. After a period of time around 30 seconds (depends on the thickness of glass of you jar) fine whispy white smoke-like vapour curls will appear. At this point I like to turn the pot over by jerking the jar to turn the pot and toast the other side.
Go easy on the heat - I like to pull the flame to about 100mm from the jar when the vapour first appears so as not to overheat and burn it.

6. After collecting some vapour - your ready to take it in.
NOTE: Do not try to vaporise the whole lot in one go - you can usually get several hits off one loading.
Example hit: I may heat for 30 seconds then the whispy white vapour appears (note: it can be very hard to see), then I ease off the heat and jerk my jar to turn the pot and watch as the whispy vapour curls fade - then maybe add heat again for 10 seconds then lay off the heat when the vapour picks up again - turn the pot again then I'm ready for a hit.

7. Remove the lid of the jar place your lips into the mouth of the jar and breath in deeply (WATCH YOU DON'T BURN YOURSELF) - it will tickle your lungs and you may cough but its nothing like as bad as a hit off a standard combustion bong. Replace the lid of your jar quick and hold that breath in.

8. Keep holding that breath.

9. Now when you need to...breath it out slowly. The flavour is lovely and very different to smoke - more woody, vegetative and clean than smoke. You will probably not see any smoke on your breath.

10. Then repeat steps 3 - 9, you'll probably get a few hits then the whispy vapour will get harder to make appear - this is when your load is finished. If at this point you continue to add heat eventually you will get slightly darker looking whispy vapour - this is smoke and tastes different and has no affect because you've already vaporised out all the psychoactive ingredients from the pot. NOTE: The smoke is bad for you.

11. Now sit back and wait as after 5 minutes you start to get the effects. Remember it's not like smoking you'll feel like you've taken nothing in and when you breath out you'll see no smoke on your breath. But you have taken in vapour and the effects will come.

TIPS:

1. After each hit and WHEN THE GLASS HAS COOLED A BIT - empty out the partially vaporised pot into the palm of your hand and crumble it up some more as you put it back in the jar - this increases the surface area and ensures that as much of the pot as possible is given the opportunity to touch the glass.

2. Try not to use a cheap lighter with a metal thumb wheel flint as this will heat up and burn your thumb.

3. Vapour and smoke are hard to tell apart - taste is a good way to tell the difference. If you keep on heating away you will reach a lull when the whispy vapour gets very hard to generate - then after a while (a couple of minutes or so) you'll get a thicker vapour come off that is actually smoke. The lull between these too stages is when you should ditch the load and refresh.

4. NOTE: The nice vegetative taste is the first ingredient to vaporise and goes at a lower temperature. Later hits will therefore taste less but will still contain a good hit - don't throw away half used hash.

That whole pot in the glass jar thing sounds cool, but I think that you would loose too much vapor in the process of removing the lid. I would suggest getting an actual vaporizer. Thanks for the dedicated and very descriptive reply. Nicely done.

Yes you can vape with a lighter, it just requires a certain piece of equipment.

Yes you can vape by holding the flame above your bowl and inhaling without letting it too close to the weed, but close enough. Eventually you'll end up burning it though, it requires a lot of precision.

This is a more efficient way of smoking bowls though, since you get about 90% of the THC until it actually burns, then you get around 30%.

Try it, pack a bowl loosely with ground bud, hold the lighter about a cm or less above the weed, suck lightly, practice so you don't burn, and eventually you'll be able to get the weed to just go brown, then you may as well smoke the rest since it's unevenly vaped. You'll still get more out of your weed(higher) this way.
