marijuana and reading

So, since marijuana affects your short-term memory, does reading and comprehension become more difficult? I'm an avid reader, and enjoy it, and I don't want words to be forgotten once they're read ---- or is reading not that largely impaired? Do any of you heavy smokers have trouble reading (when you're not high) and trouble processing a work of literature as a whole? I just don't want my experiences I love so much from reading to be altered for the worse.

Are the memory impairments of herb permanent?

Thanks for you help.

I've been smoking daily for nearly 2 years now, and I still read plenty as well without problem. Admittedly if I try to read while very baked I tend to space off, and though I'm reading the words I'm not paying any attention to what they're actually saying. Sober though, it's fine. That's me anyway, different people obviously may have different results.

My theory is that a lot of these negative side effects diminish over time for regular smokers. I'm a productive middle-aged professional and father of two and I smoke 1/2 to 1 ounce of pretty good pot every week. And I read like nobody's business.

Your mileage may vary and all that, but a lot of prescription drugs have negative side effects until sufficient blood concentrations are achieved and/or the user becomes acclimated to the effects. I suspect pot works (at least on some level) in a similar fashion. I could be wrong, but this has been my subjective experience.

One of my favorite things to do is smoke and read history.

EDIT: Personality differences could make a big difference when it comes to amotivational syndrome (which sounds more like what y'all are really talking about, as opposed to short-term memory issues).

graywulf: - I think it would be best to read when you're not high. Reading when high is going to ruin the high because concentrating on things when high does just that, and it will also ruin the book. Because what you have read while high you will not remember when you're sober.
Just chill out on the couch play video games, eat, watch T.V or go for a walk when you're high and save the reading for when you're sober.

But if you think that reading will suck and be ruined íf you're an avid smoker it will not. Just don't read when high .

For you maybe.

Again...not for me. You should qualify these statements, you know? :-)

It's really hit or miss for me. Sometimes I don't pay any attention and get really bored but other times (and it's this way usually) it makes the book more enjoyable. And yes, I do like to read.

OK, cool cool. Never actually thought to read WHEN high, but it seems like the kind of thing I'd enjoy. Thanks for the helpful posts.

reading has always been better for me high...

(sometimes i can't really find myself even doing it unless i smoke.)

if i start reading high, i sometimes end up staying up all night to finish it... Finished "Lunar Park" by Breat Easton Ellis in one night that way...

by the way - it was just optioned to be a movie! keep your fingers crossed.

i think these people like reading stoned better too

i have to read stoned. this past semester was "clinical trial time" for me, as in every class i'd study for one test sober, then the next one faded. It was actually much easier for me to learn while stoned than it was sober, cause i found myself WAY more interested in the material, so i really tried to soak everything in. my grades were better on the stoned tests than the sober ones. go figure.
