How long do you hold your hit?

If I have plenty, I usually only hold it a few seconds. When I am almost out I start trying to hold it for 10 seconds to capture every precious gram, but recently I read an old study that claims it makes no difference. What do y'all think?

"Marijuana smokers are frequently observed to hold the smoke in their lungs for prolonged periods (10-15 sec) apparently in the belief that prolonged breathholding intensifies the effects of the drug. The actual influence of breathhold duration on response to marijuana smoke has not been studied. The present study examined the effects of systematic manipulation of breathhold duration on the physiological, cognitive and subjective response to marijuana smoke in a group of eight regular marijuana smokers. Subjects were exposed to each of three breathhold duration conditions (0, 10 and 20 sec) on three occasions, scheduled according to a randomized block design. A controlled smoking procedure was used in which the number of puffs, puff volume and postpuff inhalation volume were held constant. Expired air carbon monoxide levels were measured before and after smoking to monitor smoke intake. Typical marijuana effects (increased heart rate, increased ratings of "high" and impaired memory performance) were observed under each of the breathhold conditions, but there was little evidence that response to marijuana was a function of breathhold duration."

I have found that the findings of most scientific studies mean almost nothing. There are so many different variables in every experiment that get overlooked, that its nearly impossible to conduct a "perfect" experiment, therefore it is nearly impossible to achieve the "correct" results. For instance, the goverment has funded studies that proved that a joint has 6 times the carcegenic (cancer causing) properties of a cigerette. On the other hand theyve also funded studies that proved that marijuana reduces the likelihood of getting cancer. I give almost no credit to any scientific study because almost every single one has a counter part that contradicts it. I dont think anyone really has any idea if holding a hit in actually gets you higher, but we still do it almost everytime we take a hit. Taking a deep breath and holding it for 10 seconds then exhaling gives you a slight feeling of relaxation and euphoria on its own, this is a key part of self hypnosis...maybe that has something to do with it. It could simply be a placebo effect, if you believe that it will get you higher, you will get higher, the mind can defeat reality in almost any circumstance. Or maybe it actually does get you higher. Whatever the facts, Im sure that us stoners will continue to hold our hits in, and we will continue to be convinced that it gets us higher.

After a while, it really is pointless to hold the smoke in your lungs for prolonged period of time anyways.

I usually hold my hits in for about 20 minutes just to make sure when I finally pass out and exhale there will be no smoke comming out
