dude
its brake fluid
i read the above as "i know i should have but i didnt, and wow i didnt stop, now im gonna bitch and moan"
here in new zealand you can buy a running car for fifty bucks, you can be damn sure the brakes work though, there just is no excuse for not maintaining your brake lines, what if it had been a small child and not a pole, you would be charged with vehicular manslaughter, or reckless driving causing death (not sure of the charges in usa, you guys shud have it covered you seem to sue over a cold breeze).
if you are broke there are other ways around fixing your brakes,
find a friend who is mechanically minded, on 90% of cars you only undo a grand total of EIGHT bolts to do the front brakes, thats including getting the wheel off. Make sure they actually know what they are doing!!
go to a wrecker and get second hand parts for the car (NOT PADS). you can get rotors and drums here really cheap, never get brake pads the long exposure to water common in open yards destroys the compound in the friction material.
source your own brake pads, go to a local car parts shop (Repco?) and order your own brake pads ! you can get brand new ones for about 20 bucks if you shop around just make sure they are OEM spec.
Brake fluid doesnt just disapear. there is a leak somewhere, spend twenty minutes finding it (it'l most likely be a pipe joiner loose), and never worry again.
Sorry if i seemed a lil harsh but you do seem like ya need to break this bad luck cycle, go be pro-active.
And hey while your out sussing out your brakes, the wreckers should have a pretty mean deal on a bonnet!
I know it sounds dumb but i recently got stuck in a similar thing, really similar actually except it was a 450hp motor and me being to lazy to change supercharger belts, i had to go find a new washer bottle,RH guard, bonnet, re-do all the ABS brakelines (ten of the fuckers!), all because i didnt do a twenty minute job. I started to get all shitty about it then thought fuck it, im gonna make sure this shit never happens again. Two days later and the car is complete with a brand new belt catcher that i welded up shud anything similar happen again.! brought a big smile back to my dial
