One life dream coming to fruition

In 2006 I went oveseas to england for an archaeological Dig.... fun stuff and a lot of work.... but this is not a story of that....this starts 1 1/2 weeks before that adventure
Before heading over i made a decision to take a trip to amsterdam... I had the time and the money... and damn it's amsterdam!

I hit up my camp buddy and she was down.... so we get there and spend 5 beautiful days in one of the best cities i've ever been to.... It was sunny and gorgeous out.... my god what a trip.... coffeeshops and museums and resturaunts galore....

So on the 4th day my buddy had to go... she had work on monday to get to... and I had nothing... so i spent an extra day and a half... I went around... smoked a lot.... then got on a train and went to a little town 20 minutes out of amsterdam to see life away from the city.... see how real Holland people lived.... I stopped in a quaint little town called Weesp.... beautiful trees and grass... canals everywhere...

I found a small path following a canal out away from the city...

I sat on the bank of a canal and smoked a spliff... and there.... there I made a pact with myself and that little canal..that someday... someday i would be back here.... back here to this spot... staring at the houses and the windmill... to live at least for a while.... There was something about the atmosphere that just clicked with me....

Since then i've graduated college... gotten a real job... and continued on with life.... always with this little pact in the back of my mind... scratching to get out....

Recently i've decided to persue a masters degree in archaeology... I start looking and the best schools i find seem to be over in europe.... they have the latest technology... the newest techniques... pretty much the best of the best....

So i've narrowed my list down.... and i'm down to 2 countries.... United Kingdom.... and the Netherlands....
and i've decided.... it's a sign.... it's my calling... I am moving to the Netherlands for at least a year to study archaeology....

Leiden University and VU university are my choices there.... Leiden is in a city 40 minutes outside of amsterdam... and VU is smack dab in the middle of amsterdam....

And so i have the applications finished... i'm applying within the week... And the beginning of my pact with that little canal.... and i promise.... I will be there...

That's a really good story, man. I really do hope you get accepted. But what about the language differential? Is it going to be diffiult over there, or do a lot of them speak English? Hell, you could be fluent in their language for all I know =P

language is gonna be a challenge.... but i'm up to it....

I don't speak dutch unfortunately.... but the masters program is taught in english.... They have a large international student body....

and to be fair Dutch isn't really a major language.... like french or spanish or english.... so they teach in english.... which is great for me!

ok we got us an update on this funky adventure in the land of windmills and weed...

Due to a number of circumstances.... 1 being i got caught up in a little debt and have to get that straight..(cut back on my weed drastically... used to buy about a 1/2 a week... but that ate up my paycheck like a mo fo... so I found some really dank expensive stuff... i can get by on a gram or so a week... cause it's soo good... plus it got me off of joints... so wasteful...)

2. I'm waiting on getting german citizenship so i can get the EU pricing at university... its either go in the fall and pay 9000 euro a year, (thats 14,000 bucks) or go in the spring with my german passport and pay 1500 euro (2500 bucks) a year.... yeah hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

what to do what to do.....

i'm going to put it on hold... what with the debt and the university price... it makes so much more sense to wait...

(plus get this... my parents are giving me and my girlfriend plane tickets to amsterdam this fall to look at Universities.... what the hell??? thats insane!!)

so yeah.... a little later on but still on the ball...
look for the posts in a coffeeshop in amsterdam!!!

peace, hippy

That is really cool, man! I've been to Amsterdam once and it is truly an amazing place. There is no better feeling for a stoner, than that of true freedom that can only be found in the Netherlands.

I have just finished my first two years of college & begin my studies in Archeology this fall, although I am still considering a study in cultural anthropology instead. What do you think about this? & also, what types of careers have you found for somebody who receives an archeology major? I plan to continue my studies into graduate school, just as you are. & you will have to keep me up to date on how this whole foreign graduate program goes because I am very interested in studying in a foreign country, as well!

How are you able to obtain German citizenship? Do you have family living there or something?

Oz.
