GOP seeks six-year extension of Patriot Act surveillance - The Hill's Floor Action

The bill is expected to move in the next few weeks because the three surveillance authorities expire May 27. Congress in February extended the three authorities for a short time in order to allow for congressional hearings on the Patriot Act.

The bill, H.R. 1800, was introduced in an abbreviated House session on Friday by Smith and Reps. James Sensenbrenner Jr. (R-Wis.), Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) and Dan Lungren (Calif.). While the bill does not include a new expiration date, House staffers said the date that will be included is Dec. 31, 2017.

Not surprising to see that POS Jim Sensenbrenner behind this.

And I will vote "no." The American people do not assent to these flagrant and egregious violations of our Constitution and our liberty.

Two wings on the same bird.

This is no surprise.

The phony bin Laden take down represents the next phase in the war on terror and its now being escalated.

Dear Patriot,

Yesterday, former Reagan administration official Bruce Fein testified on behalf of Campaign for Liberty before the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security in a hearing aptly titled "USA PATRIOT Act: Dispelling the Myths."

Of course, the myths C4L came to dispel were not exactly the ones the Chairman, James Sensenbrenner, had in mind - namely that the act is "patriotic" and "constitutional."

Fein interacted with the committee members far more than any other witness, and the hearing even elicited a few unexpected statements from some members questioning the government's position.

Fein also reminded the Committee that after 10 years of living under the so-called "Patriot" Act, the burden of proof as to the necessity of these "investigative tools" lies with those who wish to infringe upon our liberties.

Of course, no such examples were presented.

The hearing allowed C4L a rare opportunity to place our objections to the "Patriot" Act into the congressional record.

Now that Congress has heard our criticisms, it must know you and I are taking action to back up our words.

This morning, at 10am, the full Judiciary Committee will hold a markup on H.R. 1800, a bill to extend the "any tangible thing/business records" provision and "roving wiretap authority" for six more years, while extending the so-called "lone wolf" provision permanently - even though the government claims it has never been used.

If your representative is on the Judiciary Committee, I encourage you to pick up the phone right away to urge them to vote against extending any provisions of the Fourth Amendment-shredding "Patriot" Act.

The three controversial provisions set to expire on May 27 are Section 215 (the "business records" provision that allows the government to gather "any tangible thing" without proving it's related to terrorist activities), Section 206, the "roving wiretap" provision, and Section 6001, the "lone wolf" provision.

You can reach the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Lamar Smith, at 202-225-4236. Please contact him before the hearing tomorrow to urge him to oppose any long-term or permanent extension of any provisions in the misnamed "Patriot" Act.

Click here to view the rest of the Judiciary Committee members.

Even if your representative is not on the Committee, please contact him or her to demand they vote against the Bill of Rights-destroying "Patriot" Act.

As Benjamin Franklin wisely stated, "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

It's time to show Congress we won't accept any further erosion of our freedoms.

Please take a moment to sign our Patriot's Petition that we'll fax to your representative. After you fill out your petition, please chip in $10 to help Campaign for Liberty continue to fight for total repeal of the so-called "Patriot" Act.

I'm convinced that the pressure from over half a million true patriots in C4L is what got us invited to the hearing today.

Together, we can continue to push the dialogue in our direction and toward a full repeal of the egregious "Patriot" Act - restoring our civil liberties once again.

In Liberty,

P.S. Please sign our Patriot's Petition to repeal the "Patriot" Act, which we will fax to your representative. After you've signed your petition, please consider chipping in at least $10, or whatever you can afford, so C4L can turn up the heat on Congress.

I contacted both of my Senators and a couple of Congressman.

My message was simple and to the point:

Re: The Un-Patriotic USA "PATRIOT" Act

I urge you to vote against extending any provisions of the Fourth Amendment-shredding USA "Patriot" Act.

Now get to contacting your reps! Phone, email, written mail. Anything and everything works to voice your concern, outrage, and opinions!

No, more people are probably concerned with American Idol and Dancing With The Stars than the USA PATRIOT Act.

I got the same tired, cookie cutter response that all representatives send out.

Couple key words in there they all use - government can protect us, we need to remain vigilant. Fuck these pieces of shit.

From: Senator Roy Blunt
Subject: Reply from Senator Roy Blunt

Dear ________:

Thank you for your letter on the PATRIOT Act.

In a post-September 11th era, the United States faces an enemy unlike any other. The U.S. has a renewed focus on policies that protect Americans from threats to our national security while guarding fundamental civil liberties. Every day the brave men and women of our law enforcement agencies, along with our intelligence community and Armed Forces, work to protect us from the various threats posed by modern day terrorism. Part of this job means identifying terrorists and stopping attacks before they occur.

As you know, in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks on this country, Congress passed and the President signed into law the PATRIOT Act. This law streamlined procedures and removed barriers that, in the past, prevented law enforcement, intelligence, and defense officials from sharing important information. It updated our laws to address new technology and the unique threat of modern terrorism.

The PATRIOT Act allows law enforcement officers to work across agency lines in order to effectively uphold the laws of our nation and protect us from future attacks. It allows us to avoid the problems and miscommunications that caused the system to fail us on 9/11.

Congress must always remain vigilant to ensure that our laws work and protect civil liberties. From time to time, parts of the PATRIOT Act must be reauthorized and I will carefully consider whether it continues to enhance our security with the smallest possible impact on citizens' privacy. For now, I believe the PATRIOT Act strikes that balance appropriately.

Again, thank you for contacting me. I look forward to continuing our conversation on Facebook (Senator Roy Blunt | Facebook) and Twitter (Senator Roy Blunt (RoyBlunt) on Twitter) about the important issues facing Missouri and the country. I also encourage you to visit my website (blunt.senate.gov) to learn more about where I stand on the issues and sign-up for my e-newsletter.

Sincere regards,

Roy Blunt
United States Senator

I fired back a reply already:

Re: Your Reply to my email concerning the Fourth Amendment shredding USA "PATRIOT" Act.

I strongly reject everything you told me and I don't believe or trust anything you said to be honest, true, and most importantly Constitutional.

It is YOUR job to uphold and protect the Constitution, not usurp it to expand reach of government to violate the rights of citizens.

The government can't "protect" everyone as you claim and it's silly to even bring that up in justification for passing something that violates our Bill of Rights.

To quote a Founding Father of this country, Ben Franklin, "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety".

You sir are a disgrace to our Republic, our Founders, and our Constitution if you support this Un-Patriotic, ridiculously named, USA "PATRIOT" Act.

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God."

Disgusted,
____________

Yep, BOTH of our Senators are awful. Neither care about our rights, and by that I mean the federal government just leaving us the fuck alone.

I'm waiting for a similar cookie cutter response from Claire McCaskill, like the ones she's provided me in the past.

I find it ironic that it's named the "Patriot Act" when it has nothing to do with Patriotism. A bill with the name "Patriot" can't be bad

Like someone else said, this is not surprising. It will get extended, you can quote me on that.
