Obama elected in my microcosm

I just thought I'd share this interesting thing I noticed today at my new job yesterday.

We're in training right now and going through the team building, introductory exercises. One of them was introducing yourself and providing an interesting fact. The person with the most interesting fact about themselves wins the prize.

There were approximately 100 people here, so there were a lot of interesting things such as sports champions, ex-professional dancers and actors or just funny stories.

This is at a mountain resort in Colorado, mind you, so there was only one black person. His interesting fact was that he came to work there because he wanted to be the token black guy. His timing was well executed and it was funny.

But when it came time to voting by applause the black kid won hands down, which kind of surprised me considering the other interesting/funny facts that bested his cop-out.

The funniest part, for me, was when a guy near me yelled "Obama!" during the raucous applause that met his victory, and that made me draw the connection.

I believe white liberal guilt helped Obama attract liberal voters whom would have otherwise looked to real candidates of change like Dennis Kucinich or Ralph Nader, and this little example further solidified that belief.

What do you think?

I think white people felt bad for being white long before Obama, sir. That probably would've happened in 1999 too.

I agree, I think it would have happened anytime after the first generation of the Dept of Education.

My point wasn't that Obama has influenced the minds of whites (which he probably has), but that he benefited from this same sort of thinking: Not voting for the black guy makes you racist.

And even AFTER the election he still benefits from the race card.

Re: 2008 Election in my Microcosm

i don't beleive in the whole white guilt thing. I personally think that the democrats simply marketed a better product than the republicans did.

Marketing and advertising not only sells products, but it wins votes as well.

I'm not saying race didn't play a factor in some folks voting (whether it was for or against Obama) but i personally just don't get the whole "white guilt" argument.

in my opinion the candidates you mentioned that would have brought real change just didn't get the opportunity to market themselves in the way McCain and Obama were able to.

Of course, and he also WAS a better product than the Republican.

But I'm talking about in the primaries, when liberals were voting for the "First Woman President" or "First Black Man President". It certainly wasn't their policies that set them from the rest.

It could just be he is a convincing speech reader, but I don't think half the people that voted for him actually listened to what he was saying.

I don't see how being a liberal (and not a bullshit FDR liberal) makes you have guilt about black people being slaves.

I am talking about the bullshit FDR liberal, the modern liberal. They stand for forced equalization and wealth redistribution.

White guilt is only a problem with liberals because they see the state as the only way of rectifying their people's past wrongdoings.

Liberals get white guilt
Conservatives get gay guilt.

Isn't that how it goes?

yeah i definitely agree that SOME people voted him because they were voting for the 1st black president (same with Hillary like you mentioned).. and some voted for McCain because he was white or because they couldn't vote for a black man for whatever reason.

I just don't think that those Obama votes were out of any guilt (maybe i just don't get it i donno). I bet more folks voted for him because it was the hip thing to do rather than any guilt.
I mean.. could you imagine being an 18 year old kid in any semi liberal state and admitting that you voted for the old dude McCain?

that's just my take on it.. but personally i have no guilt so i really don't get the whole "liberal white guilt" deal.

very high.. sorry for the ramble,

No i'm a real liberal and your assuming self assumed i was a bullshit FDR liberal. Conservative philosphy to me represents not wanting to change, the organic conception of society bullshit may have sounded like a good idea in the 1600's but how many generations suffer while the old generations impose there will on the younger generations. If a change needs to be made it should be made as fast as possible (after determining said change should be made of course).

Real liberalism is bassically what the libertarian party is. Freedom for citizens, and the government only protects our rights and the state from outside threats.

But of course that will never ever happen because in a free society the greedy will always manipulate others to serve there own needs and get themselves into a position of power, and then use that power to serve their own needs because after all they worked for there power. The fundamental flaw in any political orientation is that none take into account both the good and bad sides of human nature, just one part thats seen as favorable. Humans might be social, and caring, but also they are greedy and realy at the core only interested in preserving themselves. Bassically humans are to chaotic to function in an idealistic system and thus our government will always fall into a brutal animal kingdom that is dominated by the most agressive and powerful animals.

People will never wake up, not until something realy big happens, and by then it will be to late. Shit I try to explain the why we need to end the fed to my friends and they act like its some huge conspiracy theory or their just apathetic about any political issues because "what can we do"
