NASA Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite Mission - LCROSS Bomb to Find Water on Moon - Popular Mechanics

Kinetic Bombardment technology is the idea of dropping a long, slender object fom orbit onto a planetary surface. It'll come in like a comet and hit the surface with more kinetic force than most bombs on earth have explosive. Very devastating. They plan on it leaving a 5 mile crate on the moon. I'm not sure what that would equate to when done on the earth. I'm guessing it wouldn't be nearly as large since our soil holds together and has a lot of gravitational force on it, but it would still leave a very large crater.
