Moderated Debates

An idea has been in the discussion phase for awhile now about introducing moderated debates to Grasscity. You might be asking yourself what exactly a moderated debate is, and I will endeavor to do my best in explaining it below.

A moderated debate is essentially like any other debate that could occur on Grasscity with some notable exceptions. In such a debate a moderator is in control of the format and the rules by which the debaters debate by, making sure that the rules are followed and the debaters stick to the topic at hand. In such a debate the issue is not open to everyone who wishes to post, but is argued by preselected debaters who wish to participate in such arguments. The format could be changed per debate, there is no set formula in place, but after the debate has been closed it would be open for votes and comments. The debater with the most votes, who does not lose a lot of points (by breaking format rules, going off topic, etc...) would be declared the "winner".

If any of you were in a debate class in school, then you will know what I am talking about. The purpose of the moderated debates are to allow the debaters to express their position in a constructive and controlled format that will help everyone arrive at a better understanding of the subject matter, which could include topics on science, religion, politics, culture, and other diverse subjects, while allowing Grasscity members to vote on who made the most compelling argument, as well as provide fun, not only for those who wish to debate, but those who wish to casually observe the process.

Details are still being worked out and those people who show an interest and sign up (more on that below) will be able to help shape the whole process.

If you are interested in signing up send me a PM with your request/application and I will be able to add you to the social group made for this purpose, the Grasscity Debate Team. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to send them to me via PM.

Thank you Grasscity and I hope this idea excites others as much as it excites me. Happy posting!
