How to make fdr look bad

Discussion in 'Politics' started by The Third Eye, Oct 11, 2012.

1. so there's this crazy left wing guy at work who things fdr is the most amazing thing to ever hit earth. Say anything about it and he goes off on some crazy tangent about the Romans and shit and then end it with name calling. But he's also a really smart guy. I need some stuff that proves fdr wasn't all that. Maybe failed policies, misconceptions, etc?

2. He ignored threats from other countries about the Japanese flying planes into Pearl Harbor so that he could have an excuse to get into war.

Man that reminds me of some dude 60 years later that did the same exact thing. What was his name?

3. Every president has their flaws. FDR was one of the best.
This is open to interpretation, but there is no denying that he was really, really, really good. It will be really hard to convince him otherwise because this is a fact, and no matter how many "misconceptions, failed policies, and etcs" you throw at him, he will come back with countless counter arguments. Honestly, the Roosevelts were the best, along with Abe, George Washington, and Jefferson. Top 5. You will lose the argument, so I suggest you just leave it be and go smoke weed. Save yourself the aggravation.

4. What was good about FDR?

Sounds like this will be said about Obama in 30 years.

5. Dude your fuckin awesome. Even though you and I have completely opposite opinions, you are still fuckin awesome.

Here is a link bud: Let me google that for you

6. This is all true. FDR was elected four times (this was before the 2 term limit).

We're still indebted to FDR for many things that he accomplished, which would take some time to summarize.

7. What? I didn't even do anything. But thanks, lol.

Googling it for me doesn't really help since I could do that myself and end up reading the opinions of others. I was more looking for your personal opinion.

Look at the first thing that comes up. Yahoo answers.

Yeah, that helps. :p

8. "Look at the first thing that comes up. Yahoo answers."

*sigh*
As you stated, that's just opinions, which are no better than the conversation you and I are having.
I was hoping you'd look at the more credible sources.

And I would smoke with you. Honestly. Idk why but you seem chill.

As for personal opinions. I don't want to avoid the question, but I really don't want to address it. I have work to do and its pretty beat. All I can say is that we did emerge from a depression, won a war (mostly on his watch), and social security. I personally embrace "social" movements. Progressivists(?), socialists, big-government jackasses... I like it. There needs to be government involvement. That doesn't mean I support invasive governments, it just means that I like a government that betters the lives of its citizens (CCC,TVA,FDIC,NRA, etc). I believe FDR was pretty good at it, and America agreed (4 terms)

Everything is going to be a personal opinion, in my opinion. :p

I was just looking for yours because you said he is one of the best.

I don't know how imprisoning solely the japanese hitler style and confiscating peoples gold is being the best.

I'm pretty sure there is more knowledge to gain on these matters and who truely helped. And who truely caused it. We don't know everything.

I just dont like when people claim things and dont back it up with reasons, like that yahoo answers shit. Thats why I asked.

10. FDR was horrible, one of the worst ever. Bottom 5 easily.
Everything is going to be a personal opinion, in my opinion.
Brilliant

And everyone has their downsides. No such thing as a perfect president.

Back in the day (revolution) there were loyalists and patriots.
Loyalists hated Washington obviously, kind of like how republicans hate Obama.

I don't know where I was going with that but yeah.
I suppose this election is no different than any other

12. FDR gave us a 16 year depression by building upon the interventionist policies of Herbert Hoover, far from being "Mr. Laissez-faire", Hoover created the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to protect the banks, and instituted the Smoot-Hawley Tariff, which reduced imports and exports by half.

Why would our history books tell us that Hoover sat back and did nothing while people were starving when he actually instituted protectionist measures for big business? ;)

FDR provoked Japan into attacking Pearl Harbor by implementing the oil embargo, interned Japanese American citizens, confiscated the gold holdings (private property) of US citizens, and stacked the Supreme Court so they would rubber stamp his New Deal Programs.

It's no doubt that public education would idolize such a figure, the strongmen of history are always made out to be larger then life icons to be idolized.

You don't have economic recovery by drafting all working age men into enlistment and using scarce resources to create weapons as opposed to peace time goods that actually improve one's standard of living.

If you want to know everything about the Great Depression that your history book conveniently left out, here's a good place to start:

The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Great Depression and the New Deal (The Politically Incorrect Guides): Robert Murphy: 9781596980969: Amazon.com: Books

Robert Murphy! Your not-so-local Austrian school anarchist!

Yeah alright

14. lol obama wont be compared to FDR. unless he starts ww3....................

15. Does this mean you won't or can't refute what Robert Murphy has to say on the circumstances of the Great Depression & WW2?

Smirks like that only show signs of cognitive dissonance from my perspective.

16. The original question was how to make FDR look bad. Whether or not he was a good president, you could make any president look bad if you wanted to.

17. exactly. thats what i wanted to do, but with real facts you know

18. Him being an anarchist has zero to do with the accuracy of his statements. You've just proven that you have noting to contribute here.

19. If you can't make the connection that's your problem.

An anarchist is obviously going to talk down on a super progressive. They have complete opposite ideals.
It's like an atheist writing a book about how Jesus is bullshit. C'mon guys
