RIVERSIDE: Family upset that police killed their dog | Breaking News | PE.com - Press-Enterprise

A Riverside family is upset that a police officer shot their pit bull to death as officers set up a perimeter in hopes of catching a murder suspect.

The incident occurred about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, on N. Orange Street when the family was not home.

Sharon Gonzalez, whose daughter Lindsey owned the 9-year-old pit bull named Brad, said an officer told them that the dog was shot through a gate because officers needed to get into the backyard two doors away from the suspect's house.

â€œHis only crime was barking and protecting his property,â€ Gonzalez said. â€œThat's why you get a dog.â€

Gonzalez added that officers were apologetic.

Riverside police Lt. Guy Toussaint said that the officer was actually in the backyard, was charged by the dog and fired his gun to protect himself.

Luis Rivera, Lindsey Gonzalez's husband, said Brad was â€œmore like my son than my dog.â€ He said his son Christian, 8, referred to Brad as his brother. They had raised Brad since he was a puppy.

Toussaint said officers did not locate the murder suspect.

If you go to YouTube and look up police brutality, lack of caring, abusing powers, intimidating, etc. you can see why people hate cops. And I find it hilarious how angry cops get when they're video taped

Because the gun going off two houses away didn't alert the suspect?
Unless, of course they were using silenced pistols. But if cops are carrying silencers to use as needed, I would have to raise the question "how many citizens they have murdered and then gotten rid of the evidence afterward?"

Woman Shot By Deputy Released From Hospital; Deputy ID'd - San Diego News Story - KGTV San Diego

Deputies were called to the 8900 block of Leigh Avenue shortly before 10:30 p.m. Sunday to investigate a suspicious man seen in the area wearing a ski mask, according to San Diego County sheriff's homicide Lt. Larry Nesbit.

Deputies arrived and determined the man had left the area, walking away in an eastbound direction, Nesbit said in a statement.
While checking for the man one to two blocks away from Leigh Avenue, deputies entered the backyard of a residence in the 200 block of Via Tapia, Nesbit said.

"At some point, while in the backyard of the residence, there was contact between the deputies, who had their weapons drawn, and a female resident of the home," Nesbit said. "During that contact, one of the deputies fired from his service weapon. The female was struck in the arm by the round."

On Tuesday, Deputy Luke Berhalter was identified as the law enforcement officer that opened fire on Jennifer Orey, who is retired from the U.S. Navy.
Orey was a swimmer for the Navy's Air and Sea rescue team and the first woman to earn Wings of Gold, according to family members.
10News learned the sheriff's department placed Berhalter on administrative leave pending an investigation.

Jim Morgan, the shooting victim's brother, told 10News her injuries show that she was shot in the chest, and not in the arm as the sheriff's department reported. 10News learned the bullet went through her left breast, into her arm and through her pinky.

"She's angry they don't want to be held accountable for they did â€¦ or take responsibility for their actions. She just wants them to own up to their mistake," said Morgan.

Morgan said his sister asked the deputy why he shot her.
"The cop said, 'Well, I'm sorry, you startled me,'" said Morgan.

Orey told her family she remembered the second she realized she was about to get shot.

"She saw the black smoke and the fire coming from the barrel," said Morgan. "When she got shot, her initial reaction was the pain and then she went to put her hand on the officer who shot her and he said, 'Get your hand off me.'"

St. Paul Cops Shoot Dog in Wrong-Door Raid, Force Handcuffed Kids to Sit Near the Corpse - Hit & Run : Reason.com

But on the night of July 13, 2010, the task force broke down the Francos' doors, "negligently raided the home of plaintiffs, by raiding the wrong home and physically brutalizing all the above-named occupants of said house," the complaint states.

Even after learning that they were in the wrong house, the complaint states, the drug busters stayed in the Francos' home and kept searching it.

They "handcuffed all of the inhabitants of the plaintiffs' home except plaintiff Analese Franco who was forced, virtually naked, from her bed onto the floor at gunpoint by officers of the St. Paul Police Department SWAT team and officers of the St. Paul Police Department."

The complaint states: "Upon forcibly breaching the plaintiffs' home, defendants terrorized the plaintiffs at gun and rifle point.

"Each plaintiff was forced to the floor at gun and rifle point and handcuffed behind their backs.

"Defendants shot and killed the family dog and forced the handcuffed children to sit next to the carcass of their dead pet and bloody pet for more than an hour while defendants continued to search the plaintiffs' home."

One child "was kicked in the side, handcuffed and searched at gunpoint," the family says.

Another child, a girl, "a diabetic, was handcuffed at gunpoint and prevented by officer from obtaining and taking her medication, thus induced a diabetic episode as a result of low-blood sugar levels."

It's funny how you guys bash cops so much but if your house is on fire, someone breaks in, or you have a medical emergency, the first number you would call is 911.

Yea they may get some bad rep from the scumbag cops out there but not all of them are like that. Some just get way too power hungry.
