I need a first car!

Hey guys, I'm looking into a first car. I have a little over 8 grand to spend, I was planning on getting an 03 caddy cts but the insurance was 5 grand a year (18 yr old male=insurance out the ass!). So any recommendations on what I can get for around that? I like luxury but than again I still have to pay gas and insurance. I was thinking of an 05 Mazda Protege but I'm not sure yet.

Any suggestions?

You have lot's of options man, first cars are fun. Maybe look into a BMW, I think you could pick up like a 97-00 (maybe even newer) 525i, 528i, or 530i. Stay away from 540i, crap you'll spend more time in the shop than anything. A 530i is a good balance of speed and reliability. The 528i is a great car, it's a cruiser, not fast but get on the freeway and she'll really open up for ya. These are just a couple cars that come to mind.

This car is some dude's on bimmerforums, but gives you an idea of how sick these cars can be.

dont get a cadillac, they're lame and about as fun to drive as a having a stomach hernia. there is no 05 protege so i wouldn't reccomend one of those. mazda3's are great though, fun to drive, decent power (compared to base civic, corrolla, any american entry level pos) and there decent on gas. 8k would get you a nice 2.3l gt model. i would not get a 5 series (better off in a 3 series) you can pick up a nice e46 325 or 328, but it wont be nearly as cheap to own as anything japanese. you could also look at a v6 altima if you want good power and some more space. for me i would probably buy a wrx, or acura rsx, but i dont know if you like cars that are fun to drive or not.

Honestly I would suggest just getting a beater than something nice. Plus, insurance won't rape you on getting a beater.

yah i would also say nah on the caddy. I think you should just get a reliable beater that will get you through the next 5 years without being a cashpit. Priority #1 is transportation...

I'd probably say a Honda. My first car was an Accord, had it for a few years never had a problem with it or anything. They last forever too lol.

Buy a cheap car for right now, then when in a few yours when you're around 21ish your insurance should drop a tad bit more, then get an Audi or Bmw

dude, go with a station wagon! thats what i got i can fit like 6 people in there including me(legally) and its just so comfortable cause its old and broken in. i picked up mine for about 700, but i had to a whole lot of work to it. but totally worth it, i love my car

lexus would be a good choice. luxury, good hp, and reliable. put 20's on it and lower it and it would look ballin. or keep it factory and just do tune ups and drive it for 300,000 miles.

Argh, I'm looking for my first car as well. Planning to get a Crown Vic police Interceptor

. Its a beast. Having trouble finding one for cheap ($2000-$3000 range) to buy in my area. They are armored (enough so for small arms anyway), so its pretty safe, fast (interceptor engine), and usually well maintained.

I'm not sure about insurance though. Should be relatively low if you get an older one I'd think.
