what do you mean whats aware of the awareness?
you asked what is consciousness.....well consciousness is simply the state of being aware, thats all.
If what you meant was, whats perceiving and interpreting this awareness and experiencing/questioning this existence, that question remains unknown.

consciousness is a state of being perceptive, more than being aware of ones surroundings..
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

When you go down to the basic state of atoms, it's amazing how billions of atoms can form consciousness. How does it even exist?

But, what is aware of the awareness?
When you think about it, this question is helpful to ask but easily misunderstood. It's natural to think like this, but really there is only awareness. You being aware of awareness is still just awareness.
It when you realize that there isn't anyone to be aware that things get interesting. When I say there isn't anyone there, I mean to say that you are not a thing. You are a process. You have always been changing, and to even say "You" is a bit of a stretch. All existence is changing, and you can join the flow and enjoy the ride or try to cling and suffer.
