find me some info/a study that suggests marijuana does NOT lead to mental illness?

Hey GC,

I've got trouble with my parents, who are all caught up in the fact that my regular use of weed gives me a high potential for an outbreak of mental illness (e.g. schizophrenia). They always highlight that you especially should not use weed if you have a history of mental illness in your family (my uncle has schizophrenia, which he did not get from smoking).

My question is, can anybody find me some information to show that marijuana does not cause mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, even if there is a family history of mental illness?

Help would be greatly appreciated, as this is my parents main concern with my smoking habit.

That information doesn't exist; because weed can help bring out underlying mental illnesses such as schizophrenia.

My advice to you, since your family has a history of schizophrenia, is to stop smoking.

And just to clarify; there is no evidence to suggest that weed can cause any mental illnesses such as schizophrenia; it can only help trigger that particular illness if one is already susceptible to it.

It's quite simple really... if you are schizophrenic, you are schizophrenic and weed will not change that... it will simply (possibly) predispose you to your illness (psychosis/schizophrenia).

Hope that helped a bit... either way you are at risk due to genetics, however smoking cannabis will not increase that risk... you have it or you don't (seems to be the study's conclusions). Hell... if it came down to it I'd prefer to find out earlier in my life so I can fix it before I have to deal with the world to come.

I got no idea where to look, (Amsterdamage) but I think this guy is looking for some primary sources, not just drug websites.

Correlation is not causation, but there is a correlation.

The way I see it, if you don't smoke weed or tobacco, don't drink, eat an incredibly healthy vegetarian diet, and run 10+ miles a day, you can still get T-boned on the way to work and die in an instant. Why give up what makes you happy?

There are (good, QUALITY) studies out there which indicate some cannabinoids make better anti-psychotics/anti-schizophrenia medications than current meds.

THC seems to bring it out in those who already have it... The other cannabinoids have been shown to treat it better than today's current pharmaceuticals.
