Obtaining Mushroom Spores

If you're one in ten Americans like me, and live in California, you can't order shroom spores online . However, I have heard of some more "natural" methods of obtaining spores from freshly picked mushrooms. Anybody have any experience, advice, etc on this topic (or on the shroom spore topic in general)?

I've been wondering, if you're making cakes, can you use a part of a dried mushroom to germinate or whatever the jar? Like just drop a little piece of mushie in to it?

No, you need to inject mushroom spores into the cake with a syringe. It's the one step that makes growing shrooms a pain in the ass, considering both are hard to get (seriously, where can I go to get a syringe?)

How would you get the spores from the aluminum "envelopes" to the syringe?

here is a tek for making a syringe. it's the first i found but i've read a method i think would work better.

sterilize everything, fill a syringe with distilled water and wrap it in foil. pressure cook. in a sterile environment scrape some spores into a pre-sterilized shot glass, inject a little water into the shot, mix the spores and suck it back up. voila, a spore syringe.

it's just another tek i read from memory..it seems more effective because you don't have to use such a large volume of liquid and it would be easier to get back into the syringe without wasting spores.

in a few months i'll have my own place and will be able to put this knowledge to use lol. i'm gonna be alll over monotubs

Wrong. They don't ship to California, Idaho, or Georgia.

is this a new law, them not shipping to cal., idaho, georgia?...i have had success with them in the past shipping to california as long as the billing adress is the same as the shipping adress. if they no longer ship to these states, then any other suggestions for a reputable spore company?

Your going to have to learn agar if your going to use spores from a wild mushroom. Its full of contams

Go read more.

I you have freshly picked shrooms you can drop a bit (no more then the size of a penny is needed) into a culture jar same as spores and you'll get a nice colony in a few weeks.

As for wanting to collect spores from nature, look to pick some shrooms without torn veils, the veils keep the spores in the gills sterile and will keep you from getting contams. But honestly if you can go pick some fresh shrooms just get your jars ready in advance, go out and find a fresh shroom, bring it home, cut off a few sections of the inner stalk (keep everything sanitary of course, the inner bit of the stalk is less likely to contain contams for obvious reasons) toss them in the jar and you're good to go.
