Is snorting pills really that bad?

I've heard it said that snorting pills can damage your lungs, but do the particles even reach your lungs? Isn't the whole effect based on the fact that the drug is absorbed through the mucous membranes in your nose? I've got a few valiums and I'd like to crush one up while I put the others away and I'd like to know if there's any hard evidence saying that doing so would be a bad idea.

Just eat them. They shouldn't hurt your lungs if you snort them, but all of those nasty binders in the pills can fuck up your nose. And snorting it isn't even more of a rush. Just eat them!!

obviously once in a while wont kill ya, but that dosent make it a smart thing to do

A lot of it has to do with the water solubility of what ever you're railing.

However... I don't get this line of thinking; "Hmm... I need advice on snorting pills... lets put it in recreational *MARIJUANA* use."

Like dude said up there. Depends on if the chemical is easily absorbed through your mucous membrane. Snorting em is bad for your notrils and shit but if youre not doing it every fucking day it shouldnt be so bad. Shit like adderall and xanax I noticed a big difference in the effect. More quicker onset and more intense, but the buzz doesnt last as long. Some stuff, I know opiates at least, suck to snort because opiates arent absorbed through the nose tooo well.

my thought is this.

if you title the thread "is snorting pills really that bad?"
then you know/under the impression they are bad.
personally, i do not take pills, i have snorted pills but its not for me.
if i was you, i would just take the time release shell off and eat it.

but thats just me.

IDK if they damage your lungs, but their horrrible for your nose. I snorted a morphine last night, blew my nose this morning, and just a whole bunch of orange crap came out. It was pretty disguisting.

"Snorting pills is generally a bad idea. First of all, fillers can be bad for your nasal passages, and can do serious damage to the lungs when inhaled. Many pills contain cellulose and chalk, which pass through your intestines harmlessly when taken orally, but can be very destructive if they get into the lungs...since they are not water soluble.

On top of the potential physical damage, it's unclear that snorting crushed up pills is any more effective than taking them orally. It's possible that fillers and binders in a pill could act as a buffer, stopping the material from coming into contact with the mucous membranes until such time as it is blown out when the nose is blown. This seems more likely the smaller the dosage of material in a pill (1/2 a mg of material is pretty small). In this scenario, less of the drug might be absorbed if snorted than if it were simply swallowed.

Either way, the primary differences we know of between Vicodin and Xanax pills is that there is a lot more binder and filler in the Xanax. Vicodin contain over 500 mg of active material (including acetaminophen) while a Xanax tablet may contain only .25 or .5 mg of alprazolam, the rest being fillers/binders. So, assuming there IS a problem with snorting binders and fillers (more than there is with snorting acetaminophen), snorting a Xanax tablet could be worse.
