Operation Life 09

hey blades, might as well go ahead and start my thread even though i havent sprouted anything yet, work has been engaged. i had planned on growing femmed DP blueberry and some WW but the seeds are acting up, they germinated in no time, but stop growing in the paper towel after a tiny little taproot has popped out, i put them in soil 2/3 days ago and still nothing. im not putting any bets on those so i might pull from some nice bags i have. it will be me and my 3 friends for help. the grow will be about 10-20 plants perhpas 2/3 plots with about 6 plants per plot. overall optimal goal would be 5-7 lbs but i dont bet against mother nature. so time will tell. theres a lot of open areas in these woods so im hoping to throw 3ish plants out in the open to get sunlight all day (if i took a pound off each of those id be doing good) and the others will be batched in plots.

the one i pride most on is this little pine forest we found and cleared, talk about a pain in the ass, couldnt hardly see the ground when we got there. i had to chop down 4 pine trees which means ill plant 4 more trees when all is said and done. anyway here are some pics, questions or comments welcome.

the walk there:

just on the other side of this thicket of pines is the plot

the ground

again another shot of the area un prepped

this is what it looks like with a clean floor, but still shaded. and these are our "alerters" one of the best dogs ever training the smaller dog to follow in her footsteps, they just got back from the nearby creek

after the majority of our clearing you can see the difference by how much light hits the ground!

doin work while were doin work

Re: Operation Life 09

The very first picture looks almost the best to me to run a plot. The trees are very small and can be cut down so easily... When I look at a site with trees that size I usually just see right through them.

The most important thing to consider when looking for a site is how much vegatation will grow in. You would be soo surprised how much trees fill out. It is such a pain in the ass.

The plot you are working on looks like the top will fill in heavy and will only recieve a minimum of direct sunlight.

If you look at the tree line on the first picture , there is nothing really to fill in once you chop down about 15 of those short trees, then you use those cut down as a wall around your plot.

Looks nice. The sun will be much higher in the Summer and hopefully the leaves won't block any needed sun light. It will hit from above so it should be ok in any case. A lot of hard work that's for sure. I hope all goes well for ya. Nice pic of your dogs. Excellent to have water nearby.

Re: Operation Life 09

AKA welcome!

liquor- you are correct about the first picture HOWEVER it is the pathway to the plot, its open and subject to property walkers "fourwheelers" hunters ect. i wouldnt grow a plot there but a few plants will be sparsley placed in the area. i really wish that wasnt the case, because it would be awesome, i might do some walking to find a better hidden spot to do the same thing, this is only 1 of 3 plots that have been defined! as for cutting 15 trees down, i try not to do it like this (whatever i kill i replant, and would rather not chop but cut/trim if i can) the last thing i want is a part of the woods looking suspect by cutting all those trees down and for a plane flying over these woods that would be very eye catching due to how thick things get with the summer vegetation(we have these god awful vines that make it damn near impossible to see the ground, we also live about 20-25 miles from the airport) so we see about 10-15 planes a day! although most arent FLIR planes flying over, thats their HUB if they needed to. lastly like stated above i made my plot in a small circle forest of pines. so my vegetation never left it will only get a little thicker, as the pines keep their veg during the winter. direct sunlight is from 10:45-2:30ish im more worried about the indirect sunlight than the direct. because pines dont let a lot in. none the less we'll see how it goes. ive grown two years previous in this particular area (not this plot) if i could have them out in a mowed grass field obviously id do it, but cover, and a natural look is a must where im at. so if i sacrifice yield because of it sobeit less nug over jailtime anyday! glad to have you. BTW a lot of those pines you see, that you might think will fill in, are dead. with this site what you see is about what youll be getting.

glad to have you too corto!

Re: Operation Life 09

I definitely figured as much above the first picture being near or actually being the path. It certainly seems just too open.

Since you are growing around pine, beware of using the ground soil. The PH balance will be shifted way off due to the decomposition of pine needles over so many years. You will need to dig holes in the ground and replace the soil with store bought soil of your own.

I dealt with a grow very similar to this a few years ago and that was a step I certainly had to take. In fact, I dug the holes too small and once the roots outgrew my amended soil and hit the natural soil I started having issues with the health of my plants.

I do not want to sound pessimistic about your grow at all, I just can tell that you are serious about what you are doing and I want to help have you avoid some issues that I have dealt with in the past.

Good luck bro. What breeder makes your WW? I am going with GHS for my WW and I am also growing a Dutch Passion strain, Frisian Dew.

oh i took nothing pessimistic out of it, ive grown for years but ill always welcome all comments/imput as long as they make sense and arent from idiots/trolls, your very welcome here. i will definitely be digging holes and adding my own soil.

my WW is from G13 labs (attitude) it was a femmed seed i got for free for ordering the femmed BB seeds. i also got the skunk thai haze 5 pack.

last season i grew a 20 plant mix (that ended up being less because of males) of blue mystic, misty and apollo 11. boy was that some good smoke. ive been here for years but this is the first time im going to document a grow. that "plot" above will probably hold about 4-5 plants, im really leaning tward finding a low key spot like the first pic i posted and just growing a few huge plants on it. my last plant yielded 26 ounces and i prefer to keep the quantity down and the weight up, but im playing this one by ear for a few reasons. the old time owner of this land sold it to a contractor that has plans to develop it but i dont think its until like 2010 or 11.

you are correct about that, and they dont really know anything about growing/problems etc..anything really, they just do the work that i tell them to do, give me money for supplys when i tell them to give it and i split it evenly between us all. its hard to get greedy with someone youve known for 24 years. these guys are like my brothers, tight knit from the get. they have been there for me when i didnt have a dime to my name and helped me out of the hole, id never turn my back on that, and neither would they

but your right its not everyday you can do that with people i tell them NO ONE can find out and know the severity of the reprecussions.

welcome, and welcome to you too chronic

Re: Operation Life 09

Ahh a fellow dog walker/grower! all looks great dude but I do have a few concerns and dont take any of this the wrong way. First a mod will most def move this thread tot he outdoor jornal forum because thats how the mods have been rollign latley and rightfully so.

Second have you ever grown in a pine forest before? The soil in which those pine trees where growing in is so acidicy unless you do something to that soil forget about yeilding pounds unless of course you plan on growing in pots but I dident see that in your post. I leanrt this the hard way my first year and take it form me dude, its not worth the work to treat that soil. Also those trees look pretty old which means the PH in that soil is prob like 10-15 which is waaaayyyy to high. I would suggest you get a soil ph test kit and test that soil before you go any further.

Good luck this year dude rep+ for the hard ass work!

Re: Operation Life 09

Ya in that pine feild replacing the soil from the hole you dig wont help you that shit gets deep down why do you think nothing else ever grows on the floor of a pine forest excpet for other pine trees, when in say a maple tree forest theres all kinds of other growth. un less you get a back hoe in and dump 10 yards or soil forget it. Your other option is pots....but with all this fucking around i would avoid pine forest its not worth it and I dont want to say I told you so. At any rate I hope it works out for you....my method is its always better to be safe then sorry.
