Cool The Stoned Jazz Virgin.

Hello all,
As I go through this Music Hall thread, I see all kinds of music mentioned: Rap, Hip-Hop, Trance, Techno, Reggae etc. But, I did NOT see anything about jazz. Does this mean that I have a chance to tell people about the wonders of jazz (especially while blazed?) Could it be? Why it seems it could.

I grew up around jazz, my mom listened to it everyday. When I was in second grade, I picked up the alto saxophone and have played it ever since. But, as I look at the wider view of jazz in this day and age, I've realized that it is an art form tied to some unpleasant attributes.

I've heard it described as a lost art, tied with the elderly and decrepit. Or that it's gotten boring. But, no! As a young musician of great expectation (and the acceptance that I won't make a comfortable living off of it), I have always tied jazz to something hip. Something still up and coming, something with so much more to be discovered. And it is!
And I want to get one thing across before I forget. Jazz is not "straight". Naw man, fuck that. The real heroes of jazz were so high that ONLY a new genre could have come out of those genius's composing and riffing hands.

John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Bud Powell, Cannonball Adderley, Charles Lloyd, Mingus, Charlie Haden, Charlie Parker, Chick Corea, Clifford Brown, Count Basie, Dexter Gordon, Duke Ellington, Eric Dolphy, Hank Mobley, Herbie Hancock, Horace Silver, Lionel Hampton, Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Steve Lacy, Van Morrison AND MORE were doing pot before people knew what it was.

So, if you're looking for something new and interesting to listen to, check out some great Jazz albums.

Miles Davis, Kind of Blue and Sketches of Spain (also check out Doo-Wop, it's him with some hip-hop beats)
Zoot Sims: Rare Dawn Sessions
The Best of Van Morrison
Stan Getz: 1950-1952 (just check out all his stuff, the man was incredible)
John Coltrane...
And, fuck it. Just explore. If you want something jazz to listen to, just ask me. Jazz can be far in or far out, where do you want to go?

Peace,

NewGrasses

i'm a huge miles davis, got all of his albums. I also like charliie christians guitar work. Wes montgomery is inovative the way he does the double string octive guitar licks. And there are no threads on jazz cuz it's way too sophisticated for people on GC. And got much love for Diz and Monk

I kinda getcha. I mean, if you don't get anything from a music type, why listen to it? But its those who've never given it a try who I tried to reach (trying)

Yeah, try listenin' to some! Then, try listenin to some less classy jazz. Some downright low-fi stuff. Some Mingus maybe. Or maybe not, depending on how stoned you are you could freak out.

Dave Brubeck Quartet, ya'll.

I'm going to give you some useless reputation that probably won't add to your points at all, but at least you'll know I like you. YAAAAAAAY.

Yo man. You got any obscure names for me (anything bizarre or really under the radar)?

I'm a listener always looking for new jazz. 60's/70's stuff is my jive. And good recommendations, Kind of Blue is a good template for any newcomer.

Some obscure names I like to listen to: Abdullah Ibrahim (also known as Dollar Brand), Aisha Duo (really don't know their popularity), Art Blakey and Art Farmer are under the radar NOW, not so much then. So don't know what you'll think of them. You checked out Bill Frisell? Or Brad Mehldau. If you don't know Mehldau you gotta listen to him NOW. The guy's a freaking wizard. Also, Check out Charles Lloyd, amazing sax/floutist. Um, and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. That's all I can think of at the moment. Hope it helps.

I only have one art tatum, the track is Tea For Two, but I really should get more because the guy's great. It's like... a shift between ragtime and bebop. And right on!

Re: The Stoned Jazz Virgin.

oh you should check out deep purple by him (well arranged since it was written by peter de rose) i actually arranged his version and put it on violin and played it for my gf on a date before.

its kind of odd though in contrast to your expierence with jazz. i was brought up with video game music (mostly nobuo uematsu) and havnt had an interest in jazz until one day on piano i played a random riff cause it sounded cool. i didnt know what type of music it was until i listened to jazz. and realized i was naturally tuned to jazz. =) its amazing.
