people downplaying rap and hip hop

it seems like everytime i come in the music hall, i see tons of threads and posts of people downplaying rap and hip hop, saying it takes no skill and isn't even music. (either that or people making fun of lil wayne, which just gets old) it's soooo annoying that people can say that about an entire genre of music without even taking the time to listen to the diversity and all the intricacies within that genre as opposed to listening to one or two rap songs and then making a rushed generalization about the genre.

i've have friends who hate hip hop because they say it's only one beat, over and over, and that gets boring when in reality, the strength of hip hop, the focus of hip hop is the lyrics. after all, it is poetry. you have to pay attention to the rhyme schemes like how wu tang comes up with such unique patterns and flows that most mcs don't even dare attempt to put into their songs. it's about smooth flow from one word to the next like juelz santana or big pun, where they keep going and going and going and every word in the entire verse rhymes, it's about references to slang and to the hip hop culture as a whole like Big L did with eubonics. it's all about metaphors and similes, alliteration, assonance, consonance. it's about using your experiences, through song, to spread a positive idea like jay-z and tupac. showing the realities of the lives they lived and using that as a way to get others to not follow that same path. it's more than just some repeating beat that gets boring, it's an entire movement.

sorry about the length, that was basically a rant after reading just post after post of lil wayne threads and how much he sucks and can't rap or rhyme or freestyle worth shit.

on a side note, i just want to say that i like lil wayne, i got the carter II and thought it was amazing and i've heard a few songs off the carter III and like what i have heard so far (except for lollipop haha)

You're pretty much on point.

To sum up my thoughts:

-Stop saying hip-hop takes no skill. You're wrong.
-Stop the "Lil Wayne SUCKS!" threads. We've all heard the Carter III, and it's ALWAYS turns into a bitch fight whenever someone brings it up.
-Listen to REAL, lyrical hip-hop. (see: Wu-Tang)

Everyone has their own opinion, and there are millions of threads like this everyday. I don't think rap is all that bad, i just feel the lyrics and characters that rap send out the wrong message. Most of all, i just don't think it compares to...

I agree, but what they are saying is that people are basing their opinions off one or two songs and just listening to the song as a whole. what they are saying is bring the music into different sections, i understand most of rock or heavy metal is based off instruments. but rap isnt. rap is based off lyrical ideas, maybe of ones life or ones dreams. maybe on ones opinion. Rap/Hip-hop take a lot of skill, not only to keep a flow but to actually make scense.

For all the haters, try listening to lyrics, try listening to a collection of songs, maybe a album before hand or so. try to get the idea of where things are coming from. Lil Wayne talks shit about people in half his songs. most people dont know that. (cause they dont understand his past/problems from his other lyrics) his lyrics are random but are formed by a list of similes, metaphors, ect. and make ton of scense. for the most part

see: Dre, MnM, Lupe, Wayne, Wu, Mobb Deep, Santana Juelz, Busta Rhymes (IMO), Jay-Z (IMO)

just my 2 cents.

"we all know *****s hard all day"
"***** hard at 7 oclock in the morning, ***** what u hard at? BREAKFEST, u gang bangin on bacon ***** what?"

So we're supposed to give it up for Lil Wayne because he applies 6th-grade level writing techniques to his songs? Talk about being easily impressed.

I'm pretty sure it's a fact that (real) rap takes skill.

If you want to hear Jay Z at his best, listen to his first album - Reasonable Doubt.

Kid, you're arguing a moot point. People who don't appreciate genuine rap music are just ignorant and will never learn, unless THEY themselves want to. The same goes for people who hate on classical music, free jazz, death metal, r&b, etc. Ignorance runs rapant in society. End of story.

Modern rap, IMO, lacks skill...all they do is loop their verses and loops together that wouldnt be longer than a minute if they werent. And all those background voices get to me, everybody in their crew has to say "WHAT" or "YEA" in it.

gets annoying. plus nothing but rap gets blasted in my neighborhood at 3 AM, we dont care what ure listening to, and no, having huge subs in your trunk does not make u a BALLA
