haven't read the whole thread.... just wanted to add..... sorry if i repeated anyone.......
hardcore music is great. to me, the music itself is great. but, its a genre that REALLY takes some getting used to or a really musically inclined ear to enjoy. thats not to say anyone interested in/makes music who doesn't like hardcore isn't musically inclined. but it does take a certain kind of music appreciator to appreciate hardcore. among other things.... it is an extremly difficult type of music to play. most people dont/cant comprehend the skill involved when a 4-6 member band jams out and makes it actually sound good. there are probably more shitty, unsuccesful hardcore bands out there than there are good ones. not probably, there are.
the riffs and bass lines are all derived from music that many hardcore haters enjoy. led zepplin, metallica, dio, judas priest, the who............. hardcore and metal are all derived from inspiritors like them.
music evolves just like life, yet obviously in a faster time table. in the 40-50s there was only whiny "crooners" singing with deep passion and meaning. yet, the meaning of the songs were right in front of your face. as it progressed... as it does everytime, new sounds come that usually aren't accepted at first.... and for a while after. first the jazz progressed from underground to more mainstream. then it evolved. eventually came rock and roll. and then the beatles........ theres a quote from a record executive of an english record company, before the beatles signed (in other words)..."guitars and rock music are on the way out".... he said of the beatles in the very early 60s.... we all know how that turned out. the beatles can be considered one of the most influential bands ever. not only musically... it gave bands the inspiration to make the music they wanted and not what they thought other people wanted.
and as such... hardcore evolved from music genres that most people wouldn't associate with hardcore.
i also saw someone post saying he/she was tired of all the different "core" genres. thats a definite sign of someone who doesnt like/enjoy/appreciate/know about hardcore music. hardcore is a genre itself... not a folder of other genres.... most "loud screaming" music can be easily described as metal. however, the different genres are absolutely nessecary.
you wouldn't call green day prog rock or call interpol punk....
for instance.... Hatebreed is the definition of hardcore. hard, simple riffs with excessive splash and ride cymbols and brutal breakdowns with killer basslines. VOD are pioneers of hardcore (Vision of Disorder). metalcore is all of hardcore but with a little bit more difficult riffs and sick guitar solos. guitar solos is the key difference between hard and metal core. metalcore can be best described as Unearth and As I Lay Dying. deathcore isn't really a genre persay.... it would be better called death metal. it has much more metal roots, yet played lower and faster with more distortion. often the singers sound like satan. Napalm Death and Cannibal Corpse are two of my favorites. If there is a deathcore genre i would put bands like Norma Jean and Blood has been Shed in it. Basic hardcore is the roots of thier songs...yet many other genres get mixed in.... i would almost call them progressive-metalcore... due to their erratic nature and ability to give the listener something they have never heard before. quickly changing beats and riffs...often screwing with your head-bob. They have some of the craziest guitar solos, and riffs, that it sounds a lot like metal. Emo is often misenterpreted. a genre of hardcore would be emo.... but not straight corny singing..... more like emotional hardcore. Bands like From Autumn to Ashes, Poison the Well, and even lame Atreyu fit in here. They can be described as metalcore but with melodic singing entwined in. Quite often there is one screamer and one singer. even though i (and most) consider the "screamers" to be singers. anyone can scream. but to scream in key, in rythym and with melody is almost as hard as playing the drums. there is oodles of skill involved in that type of singing.... much more than most everyone thinks.
there are definatly even more genres that can fall under the hardcore label. simply because there are so many different sounds involved in hardcore music.
don't not like hardcore because it has the ability to express itself without writing songs for the radio.
Rap is just rap because sooooooo many people try to do the same thing.... simply because its cool or they wanna be "ballas" and make a lot of money. to me, that makes rap the shittiest music even concieved. Beside the blatent and obvious lack of any skills (motor included) by 75% of the artists.... its all done on computerized applications. taking away most, if not all of the actual music making. i know its not easy to make a track on a mixer, but is a lot harder to play an actual instrument. Shit, anyone can go...." UH!.......YEAH!... COME ON!" for 4 mindless minutes. Ever notice there are bagillions of rappers out there, many of which mainstream, and all sound similar and are all labeld under rap?? then there are probably less bands:rappers who play music THEY LIKE (not what the radio likes) and no one hears them... yet there are tons of sub-genres. i dunno.... i guess i just hate rap a lot.
personally, my favorite kind of music is played by jambands. my all-time favorite artist is Keller Williams.... yet i still like hardcore.
one thing cool about hardcore is its staying power within its fanbase. it takes a person a lot before they can say they like hardcore music. most dont enjoy it right away. however, you never lose your taste for it. you can stop listening to it for years, but the taste never fades.
