Why is metal, especially extreme vocals (screams), so widely disliked? What are some of your reasons for not liking it?

Here's my history with metal. I have played tuba, bass, and guitar (in that order). And with guitar, I studied classical (think Bach, Beethoven, etc.), which utilises finger picking, and is just awesome because with a lot of songs you play the bass, melody, and harmony. So it is great for solo playing (which I only ever did in front of anybody when I have too, I just love smoking and playing classical, it's the shit).

Through classical guitar, I met a bunch of classical guitarists who also played metal (it seems to go hand in hand). So I eventually got drug into it. And I've loved it ever since. Some of the most technically gifted guitarist's are found in metal. They can play things that are just unreal.

Emotion. Metal is some of the most emotionally charged music that I know of, especially the more extreme vocal styles, like death growls and snarls, shrieks, and anything in between).

However, the emotions present are ones which are not typically sought after in our musical selections: anger, and depression. (I know there is more than this, but these are found predominantly in the more extreme metal genres like black metal, and death metal). Oh wait...these are the same emotions in country songs! (Which is why rednecks like country and metal, I reckon).

Often times, people complain about the vocal style, the "screaming". They say, "I can't understand what they're saying." Well, treat it like an instrument. And it is redolent to listening to music in a foreign language, you have no idea what they're saying, but you still listen.

They're not all about satan. Yes, there are a bunch of bands that do, but there are far more that don't. Other lyrical themes are science fiction, folklore (especially Scandinavian mythology), the bible, and <insert anything here>. It's diverse.

The screams can sound angry, demonic, scary, full of pain, or sad. This just adds to the ambiance of the track. Some bands are very atmospheric as well.

Some of my favorites are ones maudlin of the Well, who are very experimental. Like, they'll have a quiet string quartet section, then an heavy section with screamed vocals, then a piano with female vocals. Shits trippy, and awesome!

tl;dr: Metal is very diverse, not about satan, extremely talented musicians.

I wonder if this thread will get deleted, rather than moved the correct forum.

Metal is just a different musical perspective outside of the cultural norm, that's all.

To be quite honest, I wasn't sure where to post it. While it is about music, it is more about why other blades don't like metal. Don't know why it should be deleted.

Tbh I find the screaming/growling vocals usually detract from the technical/musical aspect of it if they're used the whole time. Some bands can pull it off but most I'm not fond of.

I fucking love instrumental metal though.

I like metal but the screaming/growling vocals make me feel unsettled a lot of the time. I like my metal to be either groovy or atmospheric, and I can cope with screams etc when it's really good (Opeth, Meshuggah, Lamb of God, Gojira) but otherwise I reckon it just makes a bad sound worse.

To me, it sounds bad to the ears. It's just a personal preference. I don't enjoy it. Why should I listen to something I don't enjoy, just because others do? It's not an argument of merit, it's a personal preference. And for that reason, I'll never understand why people feel the need to be so defensive about "their" music. I specifically dislike those who insist that I should like screamo or punk rock, insisting "it's good dude, not like the crap you listen to."

That's all bullshit. Musical taste is subjective, not objective. Maybe if those who enjoyed the type of music you like weren't so aggressive, in general about how everyone should like it, all while putting down other types (I'm not saying you personally), perhaps those genres wouldn't leave such a bad taste in so many people's mouths.

Lamb of god is pretty sick. One of the few modern metal bands I like.

There's about a minute of symphonic intro but it's a damn good song. They're a power metal band from Germany I believe

I fucking LOVE Metal. Metal 24/7 \m/ I like almost all Metal but I do prefer more clean vocals over the more deathier stuff. I'd rather listen to an amazing voice (say Michael Kiske) than scary stuff I can do myself lol Thrash is my favorite, followed by Power. I saw Anthrax, Testament, and Death Angel Saturday and it was fucking amazing.
Metal guitarists are some of the best musicians ever and I can listen to shredding all day haha I just wish I could play guitar (I'm a drummer)

I think the reason people don't give Metal a chance is because they think harsh vocals instantly, some of the most beautiful things I've ever heard are Metal ballads though

It really depends on the kind of people. Some are like "METAL OR DEATH MAN!!!" and won't listen to anything else and tend to be really close minded. A lot of metalheads I know arent like that though, really chill people. Me and my best friend listen to classic rock and electronic genres as much as we listen to metal.

You should also check out High On Fire. Not similar but awesome stoner metal. Pretty sure it's the guitarist/singer from Sleep.

I love the screams, the growls, everything. It's one of the best ways to show emotion in my opinion. The metal I like is angry and depressing. This song is one of the perfect examples of why I love metal. Wait till 1:40, thats when it goes from being heavy to depressing. The instrumentals are fucking beautiful, and the vocals fit perfectly.

Deathcore is my favorite kind of metal. I believe a persons taste of music develops. I used to like a lot of metalcore, but that wasn't "brutal" enough for me. I went from listening to a lot of "weak" metal into metal that I consider to be much more intense. Right when I started listening to metal I would have considered "And Hell Followed With" to be wayyy too strong and uncomfortable. But as I listened to "weaker" bands with less screaming, I adapted to the screaming and soon wanted more of it, I wanted more heavy metal. I don't like metal thats too overpowering either, where theres too much going on. Deathcore fits my taste of metal perfect.
