I've seen all but two or three of the works he's done and a handful of other Studio Ghibli productions. Hands down, greatest director/animator alive. Many consider him the Walt Disney of Japan. His films are the best I've ever seen. My favorite thing about his films is exactly what you brought up; you don't have to be a fan of anime to enjoy. At first glance the films appear to be for children, but upon closer inspection they are filled with controversial topics about war, life, morals, etc...

Princess mononoke should be mandatory viewing for youngsters { in the hope thayt they will return to it again later in life} take miley cyrus take her out back and shoot her and replace all her footage with mononoke "MY warriors! They've returned to me from the land of the dead!"
