Alright, this is my first indoor grow, I've got 4 23 watt CFLs, and using some bag seed (it was some kind of purple kushy type stuff, definetly indica). Not sure what soil they're in right now, just got it from my mother's garden, seems to be making them happy for now though.

Im the bearer of bad news Im afraid.

In your second picture theres a weed in the far right corner.
It shouldnt be there so the chances are the soil has things in you dont want.

I would suggest getting some medium from a store and re-pot them.
You could chance it and wait for the transplant but your going to grow the weed at the same time ! Even if you remove it there could still be other shit in there.

Sorry mate ;)

Which things would I not want in the soil? The soil did come from a garden so I was fully aware there would be stuff in it.

Fairly sure there's no bugs left in it, the soil has been inside the garage for awhile, there was a bunch of roots left over from another plant that was planted in the stuff, but I took out as many of the old roots as I could. Should be fine, we'll see.

A little more growth in 3 days. The leaves are still looking good and healthy. Should I get rid of one of them and use the 4 cfls for one plant?

The roots are already poking out the bottom @_@ Should I grow them a little bigger or transplant now? I'll post some more pics tomorrow, they're going through their night cycle right now.

Nope just let the root mass get a little bigger and let it fill its container before you transplant

If I get a wiiiide pot, rather than a deep pot [container], should I be able to keep it in that pot longer and not have to worry about the roots as often? I'm not sure if I'm asking correctly, but similar to how people are able to grow entire plants right up until harvest in a PC case. How do they never have root-bound issues?

It doesn't look much deeper than the cups I'm using and my roots are already going crazy.

A 40cm planter for window sills is ideal.
I used one for my last grow and many others do the same.
Their no taller than 6" and fill the entire floor space of the pc.

Check the Easyryder grow in my sig ;)

But how is it that they don't get root bound? Or is that what happens, and that's why they don't grow to be several feet tall?

They don't get root bound due to the volume of the planter.
When I harvested my ER there was still a little more room to go.
The tap root works out the depth in its 1st week then splits out sideways.

Height isn't an issue either if you decide to Lst.
My ER was strapped down and grown sideways so to speak.

For example, in your container (a wide container rather than deep) do the roots spread throughout the container like this? (just a rough example)

Yeah pretty much. The tap root goes to the bottom then splits out to fill it.
Nice Microsoft paint edit too lol :)
