Strain selection help

Hi all, without going into personal details. I am looking for opinions on the best strain to grow for pain managment. If any of you are medically aware, the predominant symptoms to manage come from fibromyalgia as well as arthritus. Being somewhat of a newbie I started a search for chemo, as that has the old school rep for pain management, to find nobody sells it, only new hybreds and crosses with strains I never heard of.

I would be happy to hear any opinions/ suggestions tho, again, I am not interested in the high so much as the pain managment aspects. Thanks in advance!

In general, Sativa strains are used more for pain relief, often because they have a higher level of Cannabidiol (CBD), a cannabinoid that works with THC to give all kinds of medical benefits.

Here are a couple strains that looked good:

Shaman - THC 13.7% - CBD .4%

Isis
Durban Poison - THC 8.6% - CBD .3%

Where did you get this info from?? Sativas are all head buzz, indicas are for pain..note the following from medicinal weed pages:
And doesn't Cannabidiol appear when thc starts to break down when you grow till all the trichs are amber? I could be wrong tho. update: Apparently some sativas are for pain after all "Trainwreck" being one so this is a sticky wicket

...100% Indica. Introducing: " UBC Chemo "...
... but for medicinally soothing mostly indicas...

Anybody have any info on UBC Chemo for a starting point

Thanks for the help tho...I am looking around at the strains you mentioned
I just really want to get pain relief for my gf so I am leaning towards indica heavy strains like chemo unless there are better hybreds now

The following is just bookmark links for my own reasearch:

Yes you are correct. He must have been mistaken or getting his info somewhere else.

Being into med cannabis, I find a very heavy indica to be the absolulte BEST for pain managment. I have tried several sativa strains and all they do is distract me from the pain. Indicas have higher CBD quantities which is good for dulling the pain and sedating you.

Here are some strains I highly recommend:

1. Black Domina
2. BOGs Lifesaver
3. Sensi Star
4. Afghani

Black Domina is by far the most potent indica (most potent MJ i have ever smoked) of the list. It will literally leave you funeral faced after one big hit off a bong. After smoking a bit of Black Domina you will most likely pass out into a deep sleep, I couldnt stay awake if I tried. It is good for smoking at night when you have NOTHING to do. I couldnt feel any pain after smoking this stuff--it has been described as "percocet in a bud".

BOG's Lifesaver is equally good but not nearly as strong. BOG describes this strain having "tooth numbing potentcy". It's a wonder to grow with several phenos and sometimes displays purple and red bud. With lifesaver you might get a little more sativa then you want. Overall very effective in pain managment, that will also allow you to do daily activities.

Sensi Star is pretty much like lifesaver, but more sedative for me.
Last but not least, Afghani is a classic indica strain that always give you a nice narcotic body stone.

http://www.letfreedomgrow.com/cmu/chronic_pain_6.htm

"In general, it is believed the Sativa dominant strains tend to help the most with pain and nausea while Indica dominant strains tend to help more with muscle spasticity and inflammation. This may be because of differing levels of the Cannabinoid known as Cannabidiol (CBD). Regardless, most patients prefer potent medicine despite the strain"

Straight from my bookmarks, that's where I learned most of what I said, I didn't even think to check another reference. This is the first I've heard otherwise, but I'd like to know if that site is wrong. If anyone has another source that directly contradicts this one, I'd like to see it. I did think it was odd that Sativa was recommended for pain, but I figured that as long as it's affecting the brain and its perception, that's what matters.

In any case, for your girlfriend, just keep in mind that last line that I bolded. Patients' preferences are important.

Hmmm....a dilema, fibromyalia is a nerve condtion that causes muscle pain so...

I am slightly unsure which path to go tho currently I am growing AK99 which is a pretty good sativa but I don't know if it would be considered medicinal quality. hehe. Thanks for the info Fëanor, I guess there would be a distinction between mental induced and physical pain. I did start to see strains popping up like Trainwreck which is mostly Sativa which was confusing. Your reply I think explains it.

It would probably take alot of work but maybe a thread could be made that lists ailments and best strain based on personal use as I can't find one anywhere really. Thanks again to both you with your assistance

IMO, I would have to agree. White rhino and white widow are both good pain meds.

Ever tried Coon Creek Creeper? It is a good strain also. I think I still have some seeds from last year. I think I'll sprout them.

I keep a variety of herb on hand for various times... Sativas are good to keep handy when you are out and about and get struck by pain and still need to function and motivate.

But I love to smoke a good indica and just veg out with some good music.
Try some of the Mind Food and Metamusic CDs from the
Monroe Institute .

The have a good deal of products specifically for pain management here .

I like combining the CD programs with a good sativa smoke.

Grow both an indica and a sativa... then pack 50-50 bongloads, mixing the two types. This way you will experience relief guaranteed. Personally I stick with the kush and apply either indica or sativa types of hash to the bongload depending on which therapeutic effects are desired. Werd.

Well, I found a seed store in Niagra Falls, Canada that sells Willy Jack's Black Domina for $70 (10 seeds) So I am going to drive and pick up a pack tomorrow. So my next grow journal will be Black Domina and will be started June 10th. I appreciate all the info guys and if BD does not live up to expectations then I will perhaps try a White strain next I think...
