Medical Marijuana for Bi-Polar Disorder?

this is something i will argue with some people about for days. me personally, ive been diegnosed (spelling) with bi-polar, some kinda of explosive personality disorder, and depression. althought, i dont think im rly depressed as much as i am just always pissed off it seems. i tried taking the prozac and some other type of medicine. the side effects r bullshit. so, i started smoking weed. it seems, when i get rly mad, or just feel like im about to snap on someone. if i just take time out, smoke a bowl. i feel alot better and can deal with peoples dumbness better. might just be me, thats why im posting this. wondering if anyone else may have the same thoughts, or some opinions.......ne thing . my wife seems to notice also, but, no matter how close we r, she could never know how i feel when things start to get on my nerves. only i will ever know that. but ive heard of people getting "Medical Marijuana" for certain terminal health issues, which i do not have. i just have the opinion that its also good for people with so called "mental health issues"...ne opinions on this?!

Re: Medical Marijuana for Bi-Polar Disorder?

I'm highly against conventional psychiatric medication (prozac, lithium, seroquel, abilify, zoloft, risperodol) and I'd recommend cannabis as an alternative to those mind numbing drugs any day.

Bipolar itself is over diagnosed and misdiagnosed a lot of the time and from your description you may not even have it necessarily. You could just have anger issues.

I use medical marijuana for my Bipolar and it works beyond belief. Psych meds drain the life and creativity out of me whereas MMJ just keeps me even. I can really only speak from personal experience that it's beneficial but if you do some research there are a lot of studies being done regarding the role cannabis plays in mediating Bipolar disorder.

There are a lot of threads about Bipolar and MMJ...I'm sure this won't be the last.

Re: Medical Marijuana for Bi-Polar Disorder?

Bi-polar and other issues with me...

Started to smoke again at my parents request (when they found out I had stopped per Dr's orders) According to them, it is working better then the 7 prescriptions I was on.

I find it works great if I smoke at night a couple of hours before bed. I wake up perky, alert, and in a good mood, vs tired, brain dead, unable to stay awake for more than a few hours (zombiefied).

Re: Medical Marijuana for Bi-Polar Disorder?

yeah i got depression also and i use mary jane for that and it cures it every time.and i know what you mean about getting really pissed off then smoking a bowl and able to handle the situation with perfect precision. And after doing a whole research paper on cannabis i'm know for a fact it helps with almost all mental illnesses.that's inculdes but not limited to bipolar disorder and depression.

Re: Medical Marijuana for Bi-Polar Disorder?

I was diagnosed at 18, (now 22) with bipolar following my complete nervous breakdown at university. I am living in France and attempting to get a tacit approval to use MMJ (apparentally they do issue MMJ for 'serious' conditions such as cancer) Unfortunately the French are the world's greatest believers in the 'fact' that pills cure everything. I was on a daily cocktail of abilify, xanax, tercian for mania; and when i was depressed, abilify, tercian, seroplex (cipralex).
For me, none of these worked, as I just felt so doped up and so lathargic, I didn't want to do anything. It lead to me failing a professional qualification as I slept the entire course through. Following this, I told the doctor that I was not going to take my medications anymore, and she terminated the relationship; telling me to go and see the psychiatrist at the CEID (French drug education facility)
I did this and for the past two months have been seeing an 'educatrice' each week, (and am waiting til thursday to see the new psychiatrist), who during my first meeting told me that the weed was the last of my problems. With the help of GC, I have been researching an alternative to the pills, and am finding that my faith in the bud isn't totally unrealistic (despite being told by my old doc that it is a 'mauvaise rêve' or Bad Dream.)
I smoke daily now, but I have to avoid falling into the trap of abusing it.

Hope this helps, any other questions dont hesitate to ask...

Re: Medical Marijuana for Bi-Polar Disorder?

i have my med card for bi polar disorder and it helps me alot. I took prozac seroquel clonazepan adavan mirtazipine for many years. I wouldn't reccomend anyone to take those pills. They are un natural garbage your putting in your body after the pills stop working they make ur problems much worse. Marijuana relaxes me and calms my mind. Flush all your pills down the toilet smartest thing i ever did.

Psychiatrists are evil for the most part. Whether they know it or not.

Sounds like Scientology indoctrination when you disrespect psychiatrists.

Every since Dr. Kester had sex with six of his patients and drove the patient who complained to the licensing board (my friend Carol Hertz,RIP) to suicide I've been kind of leary of them, without Scientology.

Re: Medical Marijuana for Bi-Polar Disorder?

What is all this nonsense? I have had OCD all my life which became out of control after a head injury in a car accident last year. I was prescribed MMJ some time after the accident for the back pain and neck tension and for the most part, it helped tremendously in those aspects. Unfortunately, MMJ was only a temporary cure for my OCD and it seemed only to get worse as time went on. I developed post traumatic stress disorder in my accident and I had bad general anxiety because of it, after trying many treatment options, my doctor recommended Prozac. Of course, I was super skeptical of the drug, but I was willing to try anything in order to improve my quality of life. The first 2-3 weeks of using the drug was almost unbearable, it seemed as if my anxiety increased and I was on the verge of panic attacks. After my body became used to drug, my symptoms started to melt away. Prozac actually helped more than any other drug, of course not without it's side effects (I become tired easily). What I'm trying to say, is when it comes to OCD, bi-polar and anxiety issues, sometimes SSRIs are the best way to go (consult with your doctor).

Re: Medical Marijuana for Bi-Polar Disorder?

I used to take Abilify. Terrible fucking drug, and I was young enough to be stupid and not question it. Marijuana has done so much more for my anxiety than medication.

Re: Medical Marijuana for Bi-Polar Disorder?

I have to agree with others that the pharmaceutical drugs have nasty side effects.

Seroquel XR, Seroquel Paxil plus Lorizapam leave me feeling so tired, I tend to lay down for half the day. Dr doesn't want me to sleep so much but the drugs she has me on are making it very hard to not sleep. I can't focus enough to feel safe driving, lack confidence on any decision I make...but the Dr says they are "good for me"...but I feel like a zombie on them.

IF hb277 ever gets passed in Missouri, I won't have to relocate to a mmj state to get some real relief...

Re: Medical Marijuana for Bi-Polar Disorder?

Remember everyone that each person's body chemistry is different. Some SSRI's don't work on some folks, and some folks have really bad side effects. Personally I wouldn't take Effexor again if you paid me, BUT I've been taking Lexapro daily for several years and I really feel like it's changed my life for the better, and the side-effects are extremely mild. In my circumstances it has helped (along with MMJ of course). BUT YOUR MILEAGE WILL VARY. As with everything.

Of course there are BAD psychiatrists just as there are bad doctors out there. BUT to disregard an entire practice of medicine that has shown that it assists people is extremely disingenious. Perhaps it doesn't help you, that's fine. BUT that doesn't mean that others don't get results.
