Diabetes and Marijuana

Hey guys,

I've been a type 1 diabetic for 12 years now. Diabetes is not simply "he/she cant eat sugar". It requires steady control of sugar levels with regular testing and regular injections. I take 4 injections a day to keep my sugar level stable.

Later on in life complications can rise up. Losing kidneys, eye sight, getting nerve damage.

I read an article somewhere that marijuana was able to keep blood sugars stable, preventing high glucose spikes. It also helped blood flow around the body, especially to the legs and eyes which helps prevent complications.

Just thought it was interesting,

Sammy

Re: Diabetes and Marijuana

Yeah that's really interesting. I've got a couple of friends who are diabetic, one of them has to inject himself shitloads, I swear every time I see him hes injecting himself. The other I haven't seen, but I'm sure he does it alot. They both blaze hardout, haven't asked them about the effect it has on their blood sugar levels. I should ask em.

Cannabis can be quite helpful in managing the effects of diabetes. Got your printer warmed up? I'm just going to copy and paste the lot- easier than going through and picking a few.

Re: Diabetes and Marijuana

I've been a type 1 diabetic for about 13 years myself, so I can definitely relate. It's tough because of the discipline involved, and I personally cannot wait until medical marijuana is available where I live. It seems like almost everything hurts diabetics instead of helps, so I'm glad that marijuana is an exception! Good luck with your blood sugars. I hope that it's not too much longer that we have to deal with this condition. I hate for any child to have to go through what we went through.

Re: Diabetes and Marijuana

I've been diabetic for just a little over a year now and I used to be a big drinker but once my kidneys started to hurt I switched over to mj and I feel a ton better. It definitely helps me when I have big swings in bg and I feel that it also helps stabilize my numbers too. I have an appt to get my mmj card on Saturday, can't wait!!

Re: Diabetes and Marijuana

And you guys know about stevia? Super sweet, zero calories and doesn't mess with the blood sugar. It comes from a plant (sometimes available at Walmart) and 1/8 of a teaspoon really sweetens a pint of strong tea. I buy mine online at Owl's Nest Plantation for about $35 a pound. Sounds like a lot, until you realize that lasts me about a year - and Granny drinks a LOT of tea! Plus I use it in baking. Many stores sell a little jar of it for around $12. It comes in liquid and powdered forms.

I'm type 2, controlled with diet and weight loss.

Re: Diabetes and Marijuana

My younger sister has had type 1 for many years. She controls it really well though, we're blessed to never have had to go to the hospital because of it. She doesn't smoke at all or do anything as far as I know, but just thought I'd share.

Remember to donate money to JDRF and fund that stem cell research! We do The Walk every year and raise thousands of dollars, it's probably my favorite philanthropic event. Events like that really help me see the good side in humanity, all the big corporations and family teams alike giving tons of money for such a good cause.

Oh, and my sister uses Stevia as a sweetener as well. She's more partial to Equal though, I believe.

Right? WHenever i drink now my kidneys ache like hell, i get headaches and my body feels like it shuts down. I also throw up easily. I started drinking like 3 years ago on occasions. I could chug vodka, take tequila shots, sip champagne (har har) but now it all has such bad effects on me i can only have like 2 or 3 beers without screwing up completely.

When i tried MJ, it was so much better, clearer and my body didnt feel like it had to shut down. Most of all, it didn't feel like i had a poison inside me.

Glad to hear that mj has worked for you too! I'm amazed how crappy I feel after a few beers now, I miss the booze but I don't miss feeling like crap. Toking is much better!

Re: Diabetes and Marijuana

type I for 6 years now. my last two a1c's have been 6.3, and ran at 7.5 for 2 years before that. i am stoked.

i currently have been trying to get MMJ in CO for diabetes, but its been hard..

honestly I think it would help me out even more because of the ADD meds I am on, i dont sleep, and because of my fucked sleep pattern, i dont eat nearly as much as I should and it causes spikes in my sugar levels.. i would think MMJ would help me greately.

can anyone offer me some advice on getting MMJ for my diabetes?

Hey Illa, I've had type 1 for about a year and a half and I've already noticed changes in my body. The most difficult is the RLS which keeps me up at night. All I did was go to my dr, tell them I wanted something to help and I asked for a copy of my records and their were no questions asked. I am taking that copy as well as my diagnosing records to my appt for mmj this Sat and I shouldn't have any problems getting it. I feel your pain b/c there is nothing worse than a bad night of sleep for us diabetics. I'll keep you posted.

Re: Diabetes and Marijuana

Just a quick follow up...

I got my prescrip this weekend. I asked the dr. if I was just a diabteic without any other complications would they have prescribed it and he said yes. That since there are so many potential issues with diabetes and that mmj has so many benefits that they prescribe it for any type 1 or 2.

Going to the dispenseray was a trip, talk about a kid in a candy store! I picked up 6 different strains, some edibles, some kief and some hash.
