is America REALLY a democracy?

"In 1997, 63% of registered Florida voters said they favor approving an amendment to the Florida Constitution legalizing "medicinal" marijuana"- http://www.mpp.org/states/florida/
if America is really a democracy shouldn't medicinal weed be legal??? pretty fucked up. Does anyone know any pro-legalization groups in FL?

I think America is more of a Republic than a Democracy.

These two forms of government: Democracy and Republic, are not only dissimilar but antithetical, reflecting the sharp contrast between (a) The Majority Unlimited, in a Democracy, lacking any legal safeguard of the rights of The Individual and The Minority, and (b) The Majority Limited, in a Republic under a written Constitution safeguarding the rights of The Individual and The Minority; as we shall now see.

The word "democracy" appears nowhere in the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution – two most fundamental documents of our nation. Instead of a democracy, the Constitution's Article IV, Section 4, guarantees "to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government." Moreover, let's ask ourselves: Does our pledge of allegiance to the flag say to "the democracy for which it stands," or does it say to "the republic for which it stands"?

"Do you want the puppet on the left, or the puppet on the right?"

I'll opt for neither.

Well American never was a democracy and isn't to this day. We are a Democratic Republic. but really read Machiavelli's The Circle of Governments and then you'll realize it makes no difference.

my history teacher said this before, as he's always said it... "We like to Teach Democracy, but we Live in a Republic." Two very big differences. Although if you think about it, a modern Democracy might be more plauseable now then it did before with the advent of the internet and such, now everyone has a voice.

This thread quickly turned from looking for MMJ help in FL to politics. Not that I'm not all for a good political discussion. I would try NORML bud. Also ASA and CAN and MPP

There will never be a true democracy in America. The framers of our constitution were very much against "mob rule".

Check out these links though for some info on NORML chapters at campuses in Florida

A democracy would be anything but great. Too many people in the US are close-minded hypocrites who feel their "morals" should be forced upon the whole population. How about we forget about being governed and regulated and remember the golden rule - Do no harm.

A democracy is 51% telling the other 49% how to live their lives. Do you really want that?

We aren't really a Republic either, seeing as we don't respect our constitutional laws. We are in the American governmental period of Oligarchical Corporatism
