I live in California and can get my medical marijuana recommendation for this (but I'd have to drive to buy the stuff from a club because they don't have any around San Diego anymore) so if I could find something that would work I am sure I could get it.

Kush's are definitely the best way to go, you want to stick with %100 indicas as much as you can which are the best for pain relief (also the best for appetite stimulant and anti-nausea). Other good indicas are the Purple family of strains, and the Afghani/Afgooey family tree. However, it should be noted that the indicas provide a very powerful "full body high" that can make you sleepy, and lethargic, so it is best used when you are relaxing or resting.
One good thing about the medical cann clubs, is that if tolerance does become an issue as suggested above, they have concentrates such as kif, hash, and oils that will knock even the most tolerant smokers on their ass. I suggest investing in a high quality, expensive vaporizor such as the Volcano. It is better for your overall health, and the effects of the cannabis are much more pronounced.
I too live in Cali, and I have a medical referal through Medicann (
http://www.medicannusa.com/) They shut down all the dispensarys in my locale as well, so I either have to drive to Corona or Los Angeles, but I promise you, it is well worth the trip.
Caliguy, PM me if you would like any assistance or more information about any of the process, or good places to go once you get your medical card. I have been to a lot of them from So to Nor Cali.
Good luck!
