MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - One Mississippi lawmaker wants to make medical marijuana legal and some say it's an idea that makes sense, because growing marijuana is already big business for the state.

Mississippi may not be known for its progressive legislation, but it doesn't mean it's off the table, especially when the state is a big player with the legal production of marijuana.
"This is not a black or a white issue, this is a gray issue," said Senator Deborah Dawkins.

In this case, it's actually a green issue. Sen. Dawkins, a Democrat from Pass Christian, is pushing legislation that would legalize marijuana in Mississippi but only for medicinal purposes.

"I think most people want their doctors to help them make these decisions," she said.
The bill would allow marijuana use only for seriously or terminally ill patients under the supervision of a doctor.

Dawkins says those type of patients are often left in pain which was the case for her father who passed away from lung cancer.

She's introduced this bill before and each time there's more support. If it passes, Mississippi won't have to look far to find marijuana.

Ole Miss has been legally growing marijuana for the federal government for more than a decade. The drug is shipped to patients in other states where its use is legal.

"It's something that seems very unfair that we in Mississippi provide this medicine, that's what it is, it's medicine, for people in other states and not in our very own," Dawkins said.
Sixteen states as well as Washington, D.C., already allow the drug for medical use and more than a dozen other states, including Mississippi have pending legislation.

Critics of the bill, including law enforcement agencies, worry about the drug falling into the wrong hands, but Dawkins hopes with proper safeguards in place, those who need the drug will have access.

I was just reading yesterday that the bud they grow (for the cans of pre-rolled joints that they send to the 4 federal MMJ patients) at Ol' Miss is pretty shitty and isn't actually bud at all, just processed plants that are still in vegging. I think I read that here on GC, but I'm not sure.

Seems like MMJ is catching on in a lot of states...or at least getting closer...

Its about time a southern state starts legalization. The south is always the last to change laws but hopefully the other states will follow if its passed. Louisiana didn't make the drinking age 21 until 1996 but can't even decriminalize weed? Such a shame...

i think more importantly this gives growers the green light. i'm not expecting any mass produced mississippi bud to be spectacular.

Well sure...I mean the Emerald Triangle's in Cali, and MMJ's been around the longest in Cali, so I would expect that the bud quality would be superior.

I'm just saying that I think a botany professor might do a better job...I know the current quality sucks, but that's because the government has their hand in it.

Because if he needs to get out more... I need to get the fuck out. All the Chronic and big name strains in MS are dank as fuck.

Man I remember one time, I hit up this guy who was still relatively new to me... We were just gonna go get 2 grams of some kush.... When the guy gets back in my car after doin the deal, he gonna say "Open your hand" drop it in my hand and ask, "You straight?" Now we're like deep in the hood of my town, I don't want to turn any lights on in my car in case we're being watched. Drop him off, head over to my homie's, take the first real look at this bud in the light... Nothing but trichomes and hairs. I can't believe I never took a picture of that shit. I only paid 50 and the one whole nug was easily 5 grams or over.

So.... If you can't find shit like said in the story above, in MS... I think you need to get out more then.
