Damn it...Marijuana Reform Banned from Public Transport

This is an article from the DPA.

Marijuana Reform Banned from Public Transport
January 22, 2004

After two days of debate and back-and-forth voting, the Senate passed a bill that will censor marijuana reform efforts. The Drug Policy Alliance had been working to defeat this provision since it was snuck into the huge federal spending bill by Oklahoma Republican Rep. Ernest Istook in December 2003.

The provision will effectively ban private advertising on buses, subways, or trains in support of marijuana law reform - including campaign ads in support of medical marijuana ballot measures. Worse still, the same bill also spends $145 million in taxpayer money on anti-marijuana government propaganda. This federal spending bill unanimously passed the U.S. House of Representatives late last year, and now that the Senate has passed the legislation we expect President Bush to sign in into law over the next couple of days.

The Alliance thanks you for your amazing support in trying to stop this bill from passing. Over 13,500 of you sent faxes to your senators. That is amazing! Together we have shown Congress that voters are outraged. This will give the Alliance leverage to work on removing the censorship provisions from the spending bills when they are voted on again at the end of the year.

We will keep you updated as our plans develop - we will definitely need your help!

that's 145$ million in aid we could put forth into some effort in saving africa from aids.

but no. the old farts think it's okay to blow it on useless campaigns against benign recreation and even medicine for some.

Some of those faxes were sent in by us, guys!!! We contributed to this!!! Although they passed the bill, we still did what we could. We didn't sit back and watch it happen. It has to make you feel better to know you did something. Imagine if we all keep on doing these type things and get more people to join in the cause, we could really change things.

It violates it pretty badly. The only leg they really have to stand on when it comes to justifying their decision is that public transport is federally funded. With them getting their money to function from the government, the government may believe that it has this right to take away the freedom of private advertising when it comes to advertising on something they pay for...but...BIG BUT....the money essentially comes from our taxes, so they still aren't in the right at all. So, while they aren't allowing private sectors to purchase ad space on public transportation to promote reform, they are still spending our tax dollars for their anti-marijauna bullshit.

This is very sad...

But I am proud to be one of those 13,500 who faxed their senators. Our numbers are truly growing. One day we will be so loud, the fuckwad politicans will have no choice but to listen.

We may have lost the battle, but we are far from losing the war.
