Re: Marijauana Decriminalization bill is ACTIVE IN WASHINGTON STATE! (H.B. 1177)

"Marijuana is a gateway drug... I used to grow my own pot now I brew my own beer." -guy in the video.

PS: there are two bills and I can't seem to see the difference between the two but the one they were speaking about in the vid. was SB 5615

Yes there was a no-vote today. Not sure why. The video did look encouraging but I did not like Adam Kline saying that MJ is a gateway drug when he clarified after making the joke.

MJ is not a gateway drug. That's like saying alc and tobacco are gateway because everyone who used MJ has tried both...it's the illegality of the drug that's the gateway. Nothing about MJ in itself is gateway to anything else.

Well the guy who made the joke also stated that personality/culture have have an impact on all drug usage. I think he meant that some people simply start with mj, instead of it being a stepping stone.

I totally agree with you, it made me a little uncomfortable because even though I knew it was a joke, anyone reading it written may take it incorrectly (in fact a blogger who works for TVW wrote it incorrectly in her blog as though he were serious, which made me very uncomfortable). Luckily they brought up the whole "gateway" issue and pretty much showed it for the lie/distraction that it really is.

Hopefully we can get some action on this bill very soon.

The guy from the hemp-love-and freedom organization was great. I have wondered for years why there is no initiative for decrim or outright legalization.

There are 8 people in the senate judiciary, and it looked to me that at least four supported with 1 very much against, and the other lady sitting two from her seeming to lean against. The other two senators were not present.

It would have to make it out of the comittee by at least a 5 to 3 vote, to go down to the senate floor where everyone could vote on it. The senate is mostly democrats so I think they would go for it.

Looks like good chances,

The bill would then be passed to the house (that's why there's a duplicate bill House Bill 1177). It would then have to be voted by a majority in the comittee it's in, make it to the house floor where the entire house gets to vote and be supported by a majority (which is also mainly democrats).

Let's hope they can pass this quickly!!!

Adam Kline (Co-sponsor of bill) believes SB 5615 will make it out of comittee

This is a copy and paste from Adam Kline's political blog.

"I and the proponents of this bill will do our best to pass this legislation. It’s likely that we can vote it out of committee, but I've heard that it's unlikely to even get a hearing in the House of Representatives. Many folks, even progressive Democrats, strive to avoid having their name associated with reforms like this, partly out of fear of appearing to be "soft on crime." Advocates for a sane drug policy will need to focus their attention on educating their legislators."

-Adam Kline

If it does make it out of committee and pass the senate then CHRIS HURST says it will be heard in the legislature. So Adam Kline is wrong on that point.

This is good news. Each incremental step this bill makes is good news.

The official link for the bill is http://apps.leg.wa.gov/billinfo/summ...5615&year=2009
Look at that once a day for updates. It's going to be voted on in the senate judiciary. Not sure when but it'll show up on that page a few days before the vote happens. Things in politics tend to take a long time.

Looks like the vote is today, I think that's what executive session means.
Let's cross our fingers and hope this passes...then Chris Hurst said he'll give a hearing to the equivalent HB 1177 in the house...if that passes we're set.

Executive action taken in the Senate Committee on Judiciary at 3:30 PM.
Taken from the link above (bill's history) so, what does this mean, and what did they decide? Anyone care to chime in?
