I hate to be a cynic, hell, I'm also sending out emails (my rep is already supporting it, Maurice Hinchey) but lets be realistic.

Congress might pass it, marking a real turn-around in our nation, but what on Ganja's Green Earth convinces you Czar Bush will sign it into law! I mean, anythings possible, but if he vetos it, unless Congress is really committed, we are back to square one.

It isn't smart doing it this year, let a democrat get into office and they will sign it into law.

However, that doesn't mean it isn't important. We have to get this out there and educate the public of this historic legislation. We need to make marijuana a state issue, not a federal, and once we do that we are closer to legalization.

If congress passes it, that is the biggest step for marijuana legalization in this country ever ever. At that point it is merely a short matter of time until it happens.

Agreed. I'm just happy to see my man Ron Paul still fightin' the good fight at his old age.

I'm pretty sure this should be on every cannabis-related forum. Christ, loosen up.

If it ever even makes it to Bush and gets vetoed, that'll be the end of it. Congress barely ever overrides the President's vetoes.

Actually, there are two bills:

H.R. 5842, the “Medical Marijuana Patient Protection Act” and
H.R. 5843, the "The Personal Use of Marijuana by Responsible Adults Act of 2008".

Here's a link that explains it a bit: my.barackobama.com/pag...commentary

This is great news...unfortunately Bush will never sign the bill...they should wait until the election is over Obama will sign it for sure!

The thing about it is that if McCain gets elected it wont matter since I doubt he would sign it either.

My question is if Bush vetoes it, how long do they have to wait until they can propose it again?

Either way if congress approves it will be a huge victory...its insane how 1 man has more power than all of congress combined and he can veto a bill even if congress approves it.

Two from my state, both democrat and republican. I <3 California.

Edit: If President Bush veto'd it, couldn't the house majority override it with a 2/3 vote? We wouldn't have to wait, afaik.
