I really hope for full legalization, but I think the US is going to be the last country to do it. Honestly.
Canada has a flying chance, at least their politicans admit to pot use and allow things like Emery's famous smoking room without busting it (until the DEA started on him). The UK had legal shrooms up until recently. They've also started laxing on their MJ laws, I think, moving it down a schedule. Meanwhile, the DEA in the US is going at full force, preventing MJ from moving off of Schedule I even though the FDA approved Marinol, a drug made from weed (BTW, for those that don't know, Schedule I is ONLY for drugs that have NO medical purpose whatsoever. Cocaine, for example, is not schedule I because it can be used as a numbing agent). Too many people profit from prohibition. The gov't does because it spends billions a year on a "War" on drugs, which means billions of dollars go toward govt worker wages and private contractors, not to mention the private prison system that thrives on the thousands of victimless criminals housed in them. And don't even get me started on people who want to keep it illegal because of the hemp part. Paper, nylon companies, fuel (oil) companies, etc. Entertainment businesses oppose it too, as it takes from their business (alcohol, tobacco, etc). Drug companies hate it because it's a natural, non-patentable drug. So in summation, I give legalization a snowball's chance in hell at succeeding. Everyone that opposes it has good lobbyists and tons of $$$, and our pay-to-play Congress won't let legalization through. The best I think we can hope for is state-level decriminalization. I mean for the love of god, the US gov't has Prohibition so far up it's ass it doesn't even give federal student loans to kids who want to go to college but have a minor drug offense on their record. You can do all sorts of other crazy teenage hijinks, but smoke a joint and get caught and they do everything they can keep you from doing anything with your life. We also did a really good job at making marijuana illegal worldwide, even in areas where it's part of their religion. Some areas on the country have started a Drug Offender database, like the Sex Offender database, where you can find the names and addresses of meth makers. Mark my words, they'll expand it to all drugs soon enough.
