What's up GC:)
So i've been around here for a while, and today came to the conclusion that it was time to start a grow journal! I've grown outdoors before, but this is my first indoor grow. Of course, there have been hurdles along the way, but nothing I haven't been able to overcome by observing and learning from you other fine growers here!
Anyways, on to the show...
My goals for this project were
a) to keep costs to a minimum
B) to keep it semi-stealthy
c) to only use materials easily found at my local hardware/big box stores
d) to learn, experiment, have fun, and have something to smoke at the end!

My grow space is a basic rubbermaid (sterilite) tub, 18gal size. Lighting is 100% CFL (5x26w, 2700K), using sockets and splitters plugged into a standard power strip, which is attached to the lid of the box with zip ties. The power strip is mounted vertically, which allows me to adjust the distance between the lighting and plants. Any other adjustments to increase light coverage are done by tweaking/turning the splitters in their sockets, allowing me to position the lights in almost any way that I please. The digital timer is mounted outside the box.
Smell and airflow are controlled by a 120mm computer fan, which is mounted to the top of the box and coupled to a DIY pencil-cup carbon filter (again, thanks GC!). Containers used for flowering are 1gal plastic storage containers, light-proofed with metallic duct tape and drilled on the bottom for drainage.
This is a name-brand lemon strain which was grown outdoors last year by a friend, who gifted a small batch of seeds to me. I had a chance to sample the smoke that he grew, and it was grade A delicious bud, so when he offered seeds to me, I couldn't pass them up. I wish that I knew the exact genetics, but he forgot the details beyond lemon-something-or-other. Seeds are germinated using the paper towel method, then placed in various smaller containers before being moved to their final 1gal homes.
Temps and humidity are monitored with a digital temp/RH unit, shown in pictures. Temps average low 80's, and cool down to as low as 60 during lights-out.

I apologize in advance for the picture quality, as all I have to work with camera-wise is a cell phone.

pics 1-2 are the two seedlings I began with in their new home, pic 2 shows the plant that is currently flowering in the 1gal.
pic 3 is immediately after transplant into the 1gal flowering container
pics 4-5 show the early progress in veg, sadly the plant in the bottle turned out male, so he was sacrificed to the bud gods and replaced with another bean. Notice the larger PVC intake has replaced the earlier, smaller intake to keep temps within a respectable range. Also note the improvised scrog/LST method beginning in #4.The switch was flipped to 12/12 after approx. 30 days of vegetative growth
pic 6-7 show the plant in the early stages of flowering.
pic 8 give a general idea of the layout of the box. It now sits on its end rather than bottom-down, for more height and to keep hot air moving out the top.
pic 9 was take on dec 30 @ 3 weeks, 4 days of flowering. Note the continued improvised scrog keeping her low and dense!

Setting up this container was almost too easy. basic DIY and you're done, for a reasonable price. The shallow wide container was something I haven't seen done, and for space restrictions, I thought it would be worth a shot, and it's worked well thus far.

Hey Ripped! Alright bro, I'm subbed. Nice journal intro.

Very cool simplified setup, man! As long as you're learning and having fun, I'd say you're for sure achieving your stated goals. It definitely looks like you'll be smoking some dank ass lemony-ish grade A shit soon! :smoke: What, like 5 or 6 weeks or so to go?

Anyway, looks like you're stomping your first indoor grow! Great job!

Im subbed in bro. Very nice detailed intro man. I feel like I understand everything the way you laid it all out. I love watching setups that were the handy work of the grower in action. Good Job so far!! I am gonna leave some good vibes Posted Image here until I check back in bud.

Thanks for stoppin by MX! Hopefully smoke-able on valentine's day (a few buds -the rest I will jar to cure)- that's the goal anyways, gotta have everything for these women ya know:p I would have loved to try a UFO for this but it only would have worked with a larger container, and it needed to be pretty small...sometime in the future.

Thanks for stoppin in man, i'll be keepin an eye on you!

Last night's (minor) update...

the flowering girl is starting to look a little frostier every day. I can tell the buds are starting to swell a bit, and new trich's are showing up all the time. Can't wait for this girl to really frost out.

The new seedling, of the same seed lineage, began to peek out two nights ago, but was still fighting to get heads up. Here she is standing up, underneath her humidity canopy @ 1day old.

It's really easy and affordable to put together. The one major concern is heat, but if you have that worked out correctly, it's a pretty nice space to (micro) grow in. Stick around bud!

Ive actually built one of these before for my friend. I started another one today. I think im gonna go buy a black tote tom because i think it will be easier to light proof than the one im working with now. Its a perfect fit to sit on top of my flowering cabinet too. Where did you get the exhaust fan for yours? I have a small fan that will work alright to exhaust it but i think id rather have it sitting inside the box blowing on the plants and pick up a new exhaust fan. Plant is buddin up nice man. Not too much longer.

The black tote is definitely the way to go - mine is a light gray, and even with multiple layers of paint and two layers of e-blanket inside, it still lights up a bit. That's okay, since my grow is in a contained area, but you can never be too stealthy.

The exhaust fan is a 120mm computer fan from RadioShack. The best one I could find without silly LED lights and stuff on it. Thus far it has worked really well, although I would like a small oscillating fan (like a bus driver fan) to mount inside. Things are looking up so far, we'll really see how she will be turning out in about another month!

Light proofing rubbermaid shit is damn near impossible. My flower cab has 3 layers of mylar and a shitload of duct tape and still shines through in spots. Fans are impossible to find during winter months which blows. Durring the warmer months walmart carries a little 4 inch fan that would sit perfect inside the tote, though it doesn't oscillate. I have 2 of these and im dying for another. Ive been all around my town looking for decent fans and have come up with nothing. Ill try radioshack.

Not much to report today guys. Watered the little ones last night - the seedling is coming along slowly and is stretchy, but we can combat that with some training. :)
Last watering I noticed that my little girl was not as deep/dark green as before, so I fed. When I looked more closely last night, it appeared that a couple of older fan leaves had yellowed, so I immediately brought the little girl to the tub and flushed her with plenty of de-chlor. water.

Other than that...I just picked up this quad last night after work. Luckily enough, a friend of a friend just returned from Denver, and brought back plenty of bud with him. From what I am told, the grower also provides bud for a dispensary. I can't really argue that is some good bud, as we matched a few bong rips and I had to sit down and straighten myself out for a while. This is some potent, spicy stuff, and although I do wish that I knew exactly what it was, it certainly seems to have plenty of medical qualities for me, regardless of what strain it is. Fortunately, I also have the ENTIRE day off today...so you know what i'm about to do:smoke:

Alright, so long time, no visit GC. Bad news is, the internet is out, and has been for a few days! Needless to say, it will be fixed soon. The little girl is still looking great and starting to fatten up a bit. Seedling is slow to start but is getting moving now. Hopefully i'll be back with you folks soon enough!

Well, the 'net is still not fixed, but soon enough it will be. Plants are looking great at 6 weeks and 1 day of flower. Buds are frosty and smell delicious, and i'm patiently waiting for this little girl to start her final push towards the finish line and really fatten up. ATM there are around a dozen colas that are lighter-sized or bigger, just lacking a little in the density department, which should change soon (fingers crossed!) Some of the smaller popcorn buds are really starting to pop though, and low temps during lights-off have produced a pretty purple hue in half a dozen or so of these small buds.

Tonight the little lady will get a nice soak. It'll be just water and molasses from here on out. The seedling has been starting to take off, and responded well to having the lowest (stretched) portion of the stem tucked back under the soil a few days ago. I think that one will really start to take off here in a couple of days.

Not much of an update, I know, but more pics coming (as soon as the 'net is all fixed up:o)

Well, the 'Net is all fixed up, but still no photos for you folks, as the girls are sleeping. Leaves are starting to yellow up, and we are currently at 7 weeks, 3 days of flowering. I anticipate that this plant is going to be ready for chop @ 8.5-9 weeks. Nearing the home stretch GC!

Hopefully i'll get a chance to snap some pics tonight and update tonight/tomorrow with some lovely bud porn!

Stay up GC!:hello::smoke:
