Re: Easy Ryder - First Ever Grow

Wow momo--- they're growing like mad! Those loupe shots are awesome. Thanks for the pics. So much fun when the flowering begins- these kids grow up so fast.

Glad to hear you've got those minor issues sorted out. Looks like smooth sailing ahead. Dreaming of yield... I love it. How tall are they now? What do you figure, they'll top out at 16"-20"?

Just wondering about your fan--- how much CFM? What kind of filter are you using? I suspect that the DR60 wouldn't need a monster exhaust but I don't really know. I hooked up a 120 CFM and even with insulated ducting it was way too loud. Maybe a speed controller would help and I could dial it down a bit.

I haven't even thought about harvesting/curing methods yet so I better get on the stick. I'm around day 50 and they say it's a 9 week grow so I guess I'm in the final two weeks or so. Gave it a final nuted watering yesterday and will go with straight water from here on out. Or maybe continue with molasses until the finish-- I've read different things about that.

Here's a shot of the changing colors on the LR2, also the ER in the DR60 along with some clones I took off the Super Lemon Haze.

Re: Easy Ryder - First Ever Grow

Hey Mystic - It's lights off at the moment, I'll measure them up when the lights comes back on. I think they're about 12-15 inches or so at the moment.

I'm basically using the following kit;

DR80 Soil Starter Kit

Except I replaced the DR80 kit with a DR60 as I didn't have the room. My fan is fairly noisy but not really noticeable outside my flat which is the main thing. Those bud pics of the LR look sweet, can't wait to get some bud porn pics! I'm not really sure with the molasses either, don't know whether to use up until the end or just cut down to plain water. I heard the whole point of molasses was to provide the carbo's that beef up the buds prior to harvest and also gve it a slightly good taste but then I thought the whole point of flushing was to starve the plant in terms of nutes (and also wash nutes away) which promotes the weed to convert all it's built up supplies...hopefully someone might shout out if they have any advice.

The only problem I think I'll run into is them getting too squashed in there DR60. I have two more ER seeds and so will prob just run two on the next run which should be a bit roomier...(depends on how successfull this grow turns out in terms of yield) I would love to grow some other strains like Super Silver Haze and alike but not sure If I;ll have the room in a DR60...will be doing some research thats for sure.

I'll defo keep the pictures coming, want to have this as a record for posterity of my first ever grow!

Thanks for all your encouragement,
M

Re: Easy Ryder - First Ever Grow

Hey momo,

I see that Joint Doctor lists ER as 40-60 cm tall, a bit taller than LR2 but still manageable. You seem to have created ideal conditions for your plants and I think the power of your light will help- my friend is doing LR2s with a 250 HPS and the colas from the middle and lower sections are growing much taller than mine even though the plants are squashed together. I bet you're going to yield just fine.

It appears that molasses until the end is cool so I'll probably go that route. Guess there's a difference between nutes and carbs in this instance- maybe the plant is sucking up the nutes from the leaves and pulling carbs from the molasses, I don't really know how it all works. Ha-- it's funny though how much I want to give the plants anything and everything they need.

Growing some regular strains like SSH would be great. I'm amazed at how people grow multiple plants in small spaces. Maybe hydro is the way-- a bit more work but perhaps better yield.

The soil starter kit seems like a nice setup, I wish I could use an extraction fan/filter like that but sound is an issue. Whew-- mj is a challenge... but I guess that'll make the finished product that mjuch sweeter!

Re: Easy Ryder - First Ever Grow

Heya Mystic,

Like you say a challenge, but not a boring one

Just measure the tallest of my plants at it's standing at 17 inches and I still reckon it's got a couple more inches left in there. I've got loads of branching now on most of them and there's some definitie blocking of light going on. Like you say though I;m hoping a 250w HPS in the enclosed DR60 with all that light bouncing off the walls should still get those colas nice and meaty!

Oh I can't wait now! I like the sound of SSH and some Kush varieties and it'd be nice to have a kind of personal selection of weed to pick from, just need to check out the height on some of them (I know you can get kush ryders) I've also heard about just putting normal strains straight into flowering after a few weeks to keep them small. We'll see, fingers crossed these babies keep me going for a while!

Thanks for your support mystic, it's good knowing that the 250w HPS has a good chance of keeping the colas tight.

Re: Easy Ryder - First Ever Grow

17" already--- whoa-- that's the beauty of HPS. Even with CFLs, I'm getting small flowers at the base of the main stem of the LR2, which hardly gets any light, so you're in for a treat when those colas start growing in a couple of weeks.

SSH, Kush and so many others sound fantastic. With regular strains I've seen some impressive LST and scrog grows that keep the plant short but still yield like crazy. It's going to be fun experimenting, and even more fun "testing" the results of those experiments.

Just one thought on your pots- I'm wondering if it's worth pulling up the plants, adding more soil to the pots, then putting them back so the roots have a bit more room. It's hard to tell from the photos but it looks like you've got about 3-5" from soil level to top of the black pots? It might not make any difference, and your plants are doing so well as is, so maybe you're all right.

But if you're like me-- and for your sake, I hope you're not -- optimizing conditions is always in mind. Perhaps you could ask someone more knowledgeable, like jcj77d on the "So, you want to grow marijuana..." thread in the Absolute Beginnners sub-forum. That guy is awesome.

Re: Easy Ryder - First Ever Grow

Cheers Mystic - You put your finger on it...great mind think alike! lol I mentioned that a few posts back, definitley going to not make that mistake next time and fill with soil right to the top, I didn't realise until too late that after I watered them the soil level got a bit compacted.

Like you say a dilema now as I want to get the most possible but I need to balance that against any shocking of transplanting them, plus they're a bit unwieldy at the moment. Seeming as though they look OK I'm vearing towards letting them be, hopefully someone else might give an opinion on whether it's worth it?? Might even message that guy you recommended to have a look...nice one mate.

I'll try and get some more pics up tonight.

Re: Easy Ryder - First Ever Grow

momo--

Right, I saw that you mentioned the soil thing and just thought I'd toss the idea back out there. If it's only a couple of inches of extra space then leaving well enough alone may indeed be the best course of action. I've seen plenty of autoflower grows in pots smaller than 2 gallon and they turned out stellar.

stay loose

Hey LGM,

I believe that momo is using a secret formula made up of ketchup and a fine ale that's he not telling us about. Hopefully by the end of the grow he'll let us in on it

Re: Easy Ryder - First Ever Grow

Lol

LGM - You're being modest, I'm subscribed to your grow and those D Ryders look pretty healthy to me!

Mystic - No secret formula, just love and a lot of praying

The level of soil in the pots has been my one concern all the way through to be honest, I just think better to leave alone otherwise I'll cock something up! Sods law if something can go wrong it would happen to me. Couldn't be assed to put up pics today but tomorrow is 4 weeks in so will get some up.

How long does it take into flowering before you get some proper filling out buds and trichomes? That's my next milestone I'm looking forward to...this hobby is obsessive! I really want to tell my bro but I'm going by the theory that secrecy is the best policy, at least until they're harvested. This grow will be suppling him for xmas pressies!

Thank for the vote of confidence every one, must say I'm proud at the moment but I'm not getting carried away until I get to harvest day...too many things could go wrong in 5 weeks or so (LGM's problem is on my mind a fair bit!)

Cheers
M

Day 28 Pics - 4 Weeks In

Nothing much to say really, they're growing a little now but not a lot. Flowering seems to be going well and all the leaves look pretty healthy.

Enjoy

Re: Easy Ryder - First Ever Grow

Sweet! Thanks for the update. Just curious-- what are your temps like? And I'm too lazy to go back and check if you already posted this, but what light cycle are you on? Thanks momo.

Re: Easy Ryder - First Ever Grow

No probs Mystic,

Temps started off a little high ranging from 27 - 31 celsius but after the humidifier and with ambient temps in the UK dropping with winter the temps have now dropped to much safer limits of about 20-26.

Light schedule is 20-4 as recommended by Joint Doctor, I did slightly increase the dark period by about 20 minutes about a week ago to try and get a bit more stretch. But I'll keep it as it is until the end I think. I see some people differ but I'd rather go by what the man who bred the babies says.

Re: Easy Ryder - First Ever Grow

Thanks for the info, momo. My buddy has some ERs going but with higher temps--- 28-30-- and the results are better for him than when it was cooler. But I've always read that 25-26 is ideal so who knows, there are so many variables that it's hard to compare one grow to another.

I'm on 20/4 too but my friends are all going with 18/6 now to save on juice. Maybe I'll try 18/6 next time and see how it goes. One friend is doing an LR2 under 12/12 and it's not looking good though-- he's about 5 weeks in and the plant looks scrawny with small flowers. Anyway, it's fun tinkering around, isn't it?
