tackling some of the issues. one, regarding cardboard and water. Seein as I've never done this before I'm jsut assuming then that the space basically becomes a naturally wet environment after a while? it's the only way I can see it getting wet. i dunnoo..

I totally agree on the powerstrip. I was lookin at the idea of separate lights but I didn't want that many cords. but lookin at it now I just may have to do it. I will look into this. thanks for the sweet suggestion on a good book. I'll see if I can't find it at the library first.

I'm diggin the suggestion on a carbon scrubber. I was still tryin to figure this out but I figure I still have some time to get that one down.

and as far as the door goes. The actual closet door itself will be open basically 24/7 save any emergency visits or something where someone might need to go in my bedroom...those are the only times it will ever be closed. Otherwise, the bedroom door is always locked.

OK...current news right now is bad news. I just ran my thermometer is there for a bit and it's running hot like I kinda figured it would. She levelin off at like, 94. YIKES! This is gonna take some fixing. But I kinda saw it comin so ya...i dunno. just sucks

For the carbon scrubber check out this:
Link

Financially speaking, I believe that that will be your most expensive item in the closet. But compared to what could happen without it, it's cheap as hell.

Regarding the temperature in the area, what is the temperature in the bedroom? I say this because, remember the whole thing in which I said remember the airplane you've been on without A/C, it instantly turns up to 90 degrees fast. You need the outside room cooler than 80 degrees and more likely to be around 75 degrees. so that when the air cycles out of the grow room, it is able to cool down, and the room doesn't just suck back in hot air.

Maybe get a small portable A/C unit for the bedroom, and position it just near the bottom intake fan.

Thanks...I'll def be loook into that scrubber. I figure I have a little bit of time before I gotta pic kthat up...which is good cuz I'll need that much time to recover finiancially from teh overall startup cost of this.

As far as temperature...ya. The issue is the bedroom is just too hot. But with my style of window I can't put a window AC in...too easily. And I dunno if the landlord would even allow it. I dunno maybe it can be done. I'll look into it furhter. I really have to figure something out relatively soon.

I looked into portable ACs a while back..they are just soooooooooo damn expensive. really not possible for me. (or anyone for that matter...)

Actually after looking on Home Depot's web site, the decent window AC Units are about the same price as the portable ones.

To me, there's not point of even trying to grow or start anything until you get the temperature issue solved.

Thoughts?

I need a good AC too. I was looking into a swamp cooler, they seem a little cheaper but I don't know how effective they are.

Update

Whoo!

Just threw this bad boy in quick n dirty. Picked her up for $35 off craigslist. Ideally, i'm planning on gettin some plexiglass cut to replace the cardboard (i had alot of cardboard) and some expanding foam to fill in the gaps where the washcloths currently are lol.

It's running now and coolin shit down. I got everything in the closet turned on so I'm gonna give it a while and tehn see where the closet is temping at. I'll post the update.

Right now temp inside is holdin steady right at about 85. That's much better than it was before but I feel it can still be better. I think my ventilation might be holding me back? POssibly my intake? It doesn't seem like it's sucking much air. The exhaust is blowing a good amount of warm air out.

hmmmm....of course any suggestions or advice from the experts here is always appreciated/needed heh

I would add more fans, obviously, to the grow area, especially if you think there isn't a lot of air coming in. You'll want a decent breeze coming through, not only will this help keep your plants cool, it'll allow you to somewhat mimic the conditions of wind in nature. This air movement helps your plants breath better as well as absorb more CO2.

By the way, do you have a CO2 maker?

WEll, even with the ac..the way it is now it only brought the temp down to about a steady 91 degrees. Which is still too high. I picked some stuff up from the store today so changes are on the way. Will post up pics later.

ANd Sues, no..I do not have a co2 maker. Is it totally necessary? I'll look into it. In the meantime..any suggestions?

ok...here are the changes.

I took out both of those POS fans. I bought one of these today

A bathroom ventialtion fan! 13 bucks...moves 50 CFM. I took out the bottom fan to make it a passive intake and it creates enough suction inside the closet to actually suck pieces of paper into it! Very nice.

I replaced the ugly lights-attached-to-the-power-strip with this.

(though, it's jsut mocked up there roughly right now...I'll secure it better later.)

I bought a 40 ft extension cord and cut it into 5 foot lengths. I bought 3-3 pronged plugs and 3-direct light bulb adapters and made 3 separate cords so they hang independently. Except for the big one...gotta make another cord for that. I'll get around to it.

Here's a pic of that bulb adapter thingy.

Neato, eh? lol

Those are the changes so far. Temp is now sitting at about 81 degrees! Fuck ya! I gotta do some more tidying and sealing up some cracks but all in all...it's looking promising.

ONe question for you guys. In my moving around and building shit I have rubbed up against the mylar and smudged it up a bit. What's the best way to clean it? Soap/water? Windex? Somethin else?

I cna't say thanks enough for all your help so far, everyone.

Re: jcm's Closet Grow

So I ran the room all night last night for the first time to see how warm it would get after being on for a long time.

Well I was pleasently surprised when I woke up this morning to find that the room was running at a pleasent 76.6 degrees.

Needless to say, the day's off to a good start

NOw it can get better with the arrival of a surprise in my mailbox

Re: jcm's Closet Grow

temps looking real good to me holding at 76 degrees. Looks like you ended up going all out in a way looking at the new fans. Nothing wrong with that. cant wait to see the babies in there.

dont worry about the smug prints on the mylar. Happens to everybody.. just like getting dirt on tires, nothing you can do just rum em then replace em.
