I just received a GreenHouse Lemon Skunk seed and I've pretty much decided how my setup will function, the only problem is that when it comes to the right nutrient, there's too much debate over Advanced Nutrients and DWC.

I guess my question is, which brand should I choose or does it really matter. Do certain nutrients work better with certain strains?

Little background, I only plan on growing 1 plant as a trial and error type thing.

Nutrients are nutrients. Food is food.

My suggestion is to go buy some CNS17. It's cheap, effective and it's a single part formula. You can't really fuck it up. Just keep your EC under 1 and you should be fine! I usually don't find a huge need to put more than 1 EC for the whole flowering process. I don't veg though, I send rooted clones directly into flowering.

Awesome, thanks for the replies.

I think I'll try getting the CNS17 Grow and Ripe. However I do have a question concerning CNS17. What's the difference between the Coco & Soil formula as opposed to just the Hydroponic formula? Does it pretty much speak for it self? (I plan on using clay pellets as my growing medium)

As for the EC Meter, as I'm not using soil I'll just assume I calculate the salt level by placing it in my combined solution afterwards.

Plants use about 16 different nutrients. Aside from air, water, and light, you need to supply the rest to the root zone. These nutrients come in the form of salts that are dissolved in water. You can buy all of these in a single bottle, for one price, or 10 different bottles with 10 different price tags. The plants don't care which brand of salts they're fed with, or how many bottles it came from, or which characters are on the bottles, but will reward you if you feed them what's right. Lucas formula ensures that you are feeding them what's right. It is ideal for starting out, and experienced growers alike. The program allows you to choose which nutrient to use (AN has even copied GH's most popular system, so you can use it, if you want.) I prefer GH FloraNova Bloom. It's a 1 part solution for veg and flower. It's proven, and inexpensive. Simple is better. AN is a waste of money, and they prey on people who don't think for themselves, or do proper research (which is a large market!) it will work, but you will pay more to make the same thing. In the end, it's just weed. Being new, your skills and environment will have a bigger effect on quality/quantity than your nutrients right now. (assuming you follow a viable nutrient plan.

FYI, any coco specific nutrient is going to contain extra calcium and magnesium, due to the properties of the coconut husk, and these minerals "sticking" to it, leaves the plant wanting. So the nute companies accommodate by adding extra of these two nutrients.

You'll need a pH/PPM meter, too. It's as important as your lights.

Awesome, I just ordered the GH FloraNova Grow and Bloom and should get them in a couple of days.

As for the pH/PPM/EC Meters, unfortunately I don't have the money to get the immediately. I also need to do some more research to understand how/how often to use them, as well as research which one I should get.

OP, plz do not even start DWC if you do not have a PH Meter at least. You will face problems and you will be swimming blind without your PH Meter. Yes, PH will swing during the grow in DWC.

Ebay and Amazon got it pretty cheap, starting at $7.

I use AN for the past 3 years. I will not get into argument if AN is more or less expensive than other MFC. Because is moot a point at this point, you already made your mind and bought your nutrients.

To the OriginalPast:

Would you like to be called "a grower that do not think for yourself" because you use a different product than what you like ?

Peace

P.S. - still remember the first time I bought my 1st good car. Most of people were complaining about being expensive and being and Gas Burner fro just use to go to the Office and some Trips on the weekends. I was "WTF, who cares ! I'll drive it and enjoy" but guess what the haters were driving "Chevys & Fords". True any car is to go from Point A to B. How we ride in between distance is on us. Me personally, I like Class and Style !

advanced nutrients is a brand of nutrients

dwc stands for deep water culture and it is a hydroponic way of growing plants where the roots of the plants sit in a nutrient solution 24/7

you can use advanced nutrients in a dwc system

if you dont ever want to have to deal with ph or ppm, get advanced nutrients ph perfect (i personally like the sensi grow a&b and sensi bloom a&b, and use the hobbiest bundle of suppliments) and use reverse osmosis water, and youll never need a PH or ppm meter, as long as you stay below the recommended dosage.
i've had great sucsess on my first 2 grows using theyre stuff in DWC bubble buckets.

Hey bro I noticed ur about to start your grow without all your must have items.. I'm not a pro but u can start without a ph or ppm meter. But believe me it is a must have thing.. So if u feed or fill ur Rez use R/O water or distilled water.. This keeps ur ppms low also just use base nutes bro. It will keep things in ur Rex as stable as possible until u get ur meters.. But if I start ur grow then u must have ur meters by the end of week 2 at least

I'm AN user. Right now I have the PH Perfect version and is working like charm. However I will never, never go without PH meter. PPM is not a big deal because you can control PPM with dosages of Nutrients. So far AN works as stated. Since most of us use different additives from another MFC too as well. A PH Meter is MUST HAVE ITEM for Hydroponics. After you start mixing the different supplements, bye, bye ph perfect. However I like AN so much I do not mind calibrating the PH again.

Quick update:

I just ordered a 6 in 1 meter which includes pH, PPM, and EC. Should be getting it in a few weeks. I've got a bucket of water out in the open so it can get oxygenated, and I'll make due until it arrives. I should also be getting my nutrients in a day or two, so I'll follow the instructions to mix it into the water.

Only way that water will get oxygen is if u drop a airdrome in the bucket and let it run.for a while.. Letting water just sit it the open evaporates most of the unuseful stuff in the tap water.. What are you using anyway tap water or R/O distilled

Without a doubt, don't skimp on a pH meter. I'd buy a pH meter before buying nutrients. Don't even start your grow without a pH meter. You can go the way of Advanced Nutrients pH Perfect line, but then you're missing out on the "learn how to grow" part of growing, which is the best part about it!

Unfortunately it's a little late for that as I have already been growing it for a week now, but hopefully I can manage until it arrives.

On another note, I'm thinking of starting a grow journal and possibly a time lapse video of it's growth for the next 2 months. Would this be a good idea as I'd get pointers here and there as I go?
