70w hps rewire

i have a 70w hps home security light bought at the depot. I have rewired a 150w in the past to have a remote ballast. But now I cant find anything about the 70w cant seem to find specs on how close the ignitor has to be to the lamp to start it. Has anyone remote ballasted a 70 w before? Would like to know before I rip it apart to make my cool tube.

Re: 70w hps rewire

I believe that as long as you use the correct gauge wire, your igniters distance will not matter. And even if it did, what can be pulled apart and rewired can be put back together and rewired. worst case scenario it does not fire.

Re: 70w hps rewire

one more quick question can I run the same cord to both ballasts? from my power outlet to my ballasts one wire? i think i would just run one wire from wall outlet to both ballasts then separate wires to the lights. i have a wire rated for 13 A and both ballasts are 1.6 a would this be fine?

You should be fine. Just check the temp of the wire. You don't want it to get hot al all. If it does, just use bigger gauge wire, 14 or 12 guage should work. What type of ventalation are you going to use for the cool tube? Post Pics.

I built a light just like that, It worked pretty well. Here is a link to a good guide that you might find helpful.

Re: 70w hps rewire

i have some 13 gauge wire which will work. Ill try to post pics when done. The tube is a 4" tube but i will be running two cool tube parallel to each other with two 70w in each tube. So two tubes with two lights in each. that will give me 140w per tube 280w total. Both 4" tubes will be hooked up to a 6" inline duct fan. I will test it 1st to see if the 6" will work or not if it doesnt i just stepit up to a 8" inline fan.

Re: 70w hps rewire

did you buy the other 70 watt units yet or do you only have one for now? A single 400 may be cheaper, draw less amperage, give you more lumens per watt, fit in one 4" cooltube/bake-a-round, be less complicated for ducting and venting etc etc...You may want to rethink this one.

Re: 70w hps rewire

I bought one the other threes were free! I realize its not the most efficient and a 400w makes more sense but I'm working with what i have.

Hey I did the same thing. And yes you can run one "hot wire" for both power supplies. I used an old computer power supply to mount the transformer and ignighter. I then made a air cooled hood out of 1/2 plywood, a piece of this for a reflector, and some glass from the local glass shop. I used an old 12 gauge extension cord for the light cord.

This worked like a charm for my first run.

If you look at the rest of that section of the IC forums they have all kinds of DIY links! I always check there when I working on a project.
