http://www.plantlightinghydroponics....er-p-2364.html

will this effectively work for my 2'x2'x5' darkroom tent will a 171 cfm inline fan?

makes me wonder since these are a bit cheaper than the more popular carbon scrubber design.

Re: unconventional carbon filter?

Expensive compared to some you can make, but damn if that don't look easy! It just hooks up to 4" duct right? Snap-on upgrades for the win!

Yep, it hooks straight to a 4" duct and the coolest part is it CLAIMS that, with monthly upkeep, it will be effective for years. sounds almost too good to be true, but given the size of my grow space and the ease of use im going to give it a try.

Re: unconventional carbon filter?

I'd hate burst your bubble but......
That will not work for the purpose that your hoping for.
You need activated charcoal for it to work. Activated charcoal are tiny little pebbles
that are porous and will absorb smells.
A fiber carbon filter is not the same thing. A fiber carbon filter is the same thing for
something like the vent in your stove.
Plus you said your blower is 171cfm. That's waaaay too big for that little filter.
Your blower would suck the air in too fast for that filter to work anyways.

Re: unconventional carbon filter?

"The Deau Passe Organic Air charcoal fiber filter line uses charcoal fibers with millions of tiny pores on a huge surface area which trap gases, particles and organisms."

It is activated carbon. You can buy just straight activated carbon air filters at hardware stores. It's not just in pellet form.

So no, you're not bursting anyones bubble.

I speak from experience, those filters don't work.
But if you don't believe me ....try it and find out for yourself.
I just thought I'd save you $50

Its understandable if this is not appropriate for the application or powerful enough for my purposes but to say something like it cannot handle 171cfms is a bit ignorant seeing as it rated for over twice that much airflow. Maybe this isnt the filter to go for but ill try and it write a detailed review just in case anyone is interested. Thanks for the input and i dont doubt that the carbon filters that utilize actual activated carbon pellets is more effective, it makes sense with the surface are calculations (filters with a certain width of filler would bump the surface area equation up 2x or 3x)

When these filter first came on the market I looked into them for their light weight and ease of installation. In my research what I was able to figure what was that they were initially very affective but the relatively small amount of activated charcoal would become saturated much quicker than a traditional can filter. The local hydro shop advised that these filter had about a 12 month likely lifespan as opposed to 2 years+ on a can filter. If you are just starting or only do a round a year or so I say they are great. If you are setting up a more permanent room or want to be more careful I'd go with an appropriately sized can filter.

Thanks duckhead, sounds like im starting to get some balanced perspectives finally. I only grow 2-4 plants at a time but really stinky stuff in flower(bluecheese at the moment). Sounds like you know your stuff since the company suggests a monthly washing regimen. Thanks.

Im going to order it this weekend and ill have an review up a week or so after i try it out on the flowering bluecheese ladies.

Thanks again everybody, i've gotten more useful responses on this site than any other comparable forum. Much love and happy smoking

Look, your gonna do whatever you want regardless of what anyone says on here. I'm
just trying to help you out.
Yea, I saw what it said....It's rated at something like 500 some CFM's.
C'mon.....think about, doesn't that sound a little far fetched.

I've tried so many cheap thrifty ideas on saving money on my grows and the #1 thing
I've tried to save money on was getting rid of the smell.
I've tried everything.
I've even tried making my own carbon scrubbers.
Finally I did it what the books recommend.
I have a 28 inch tall by 9 inch wide ProFilter attached to a 265 Cfm blower.
I grow Dutch Passion Oasis, Hydro, SoG style. I grow a total of 24 plants at one time.
Anything less than what I use for getting rid of smell would be ineffective and the entire place that I grow in would stink like hell.
