Re: Will a black light work

yes led grow lights work but are EXTREMELY expensive because the technology is relatively new. cheapest led setup ive seen was $500 on ebay.

Ive seen a 90w setup go for about 150 but the 300w versions are running at 1200-1500 and the 600w versions are going for about 2500+

Re: Will a black light work

as a general rule 90w is only good for 1 plant... idk if you could even go sog w/ 90w and from what i understand the power draw from the ballast is outrageous.

They claim to be even more efficient than even florecents...
GrowPanel Pro 300 Watt LED Grow Light
this one claims to be the equivalent of a 1000w hm and hps... with 80% of the power costs.
The 600w versions make an identical claim and they say they are equal to 2 1000w bulbs. I don't know anyone who has done this or put up this kind of money just to give it a try. I'd give it a try, but I'd rather just spend the money towards my addittions to what i already got.

Re: Will a black light work

the average LED uses less than 1 amp/v... with that being said the led light itself doesnt use that much power... were you lose alot of money is the amperage lost in the ballast itself... a ballast is basically a transformer that goes from 120/240 depending on how its wired to either a higher or lower voltage. hence the need for extremely large capacitors w/ hid setups, the heat lost in the ballast is whats costing these people using LED setups.. being an electrician by trade its a little easier for me to understand, but putting it in lamens terms is a little difficult. the ballast technology for LED lights really isnt up to par for the lights themselves.. besides the initial start up cost for an LED grow is outrageous.

...just a thought.

his question has been answered by experienced and unexperienced growers alike.... plants period cannot grow under the UV spectrum emitted by a blacklight.. so to say our replies are bullshit is obsurd.

Yea, my cousin kept raving to his buddies "Oh you can grow with a black light"
So instead of backhanding his ass I shoved about 20 different threads from about 10 different wesites saying "YOU CANNOT USE BLACKLIGHTS!"

But hell yea, I love my LEDs, they run cool, cheap, but most importantly:FUCKING BRIGHT!

haha, I have 4 panels totaling about 1,000 lights and I'm buying about 5,000 more for a huge project I'm working on (5,000 will cost me about..oh...$1000 but I'll keep you in the loop on the whole thing :P)

...Samiel, dude...I wasn't even talk'n about u, wtf? But, I mean, fuck you anyhow! ...how u like them apples...

Flourescents and Kelvin Myth

...here is the explanation of this whole blacklight issue, but...Samiel, what I said was, " the question was , "does a blacklight have any plant value"....okay, and I seen several negative responses...like "Rookie" ...and so forth. I stated that those quotes were arrogant, NOT YOU! ...but, like I said , FUCK U ANYHOW! Your being an electrician don't mean a damn thing to do with lumens/kelvins ...you just stick your ass to ohms law chump! BLAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Will a black light work

Actually UV1, and UV2 trigger female plants to produce THC, which in turn acts as sunscreen for the flowers. You can buy UV, or black lights which operate in this spectrum, but I doubt a simple poster type light puts out enough wattage/lumens to trigger a response in your plants. I would only use them in the last stages of flowering, to give it a little more kick, (like my stuff needs to be stronger) The HPS lights have more of this type light, than the metal halides. That is why they are better for flowering, and halides are better for the vegative state. Its ALL about the spectrum. Wish I could take credit for this info, but my broinlaw, the professor of botany, in one of our instutions of HIGHER education, has helped me a lot with the details. Swampboy

Re: Will a black light work

UV radiation is not used by Cannabis to grow, it does however aid THC production in the glands but it comes in 3 available flavours, first is UVC, this is extremely dangerous, it is used to produce ozone (the powerful radiation from the bulb will convert 02 into 03) and in sterilisation of water ( put a recirculator in your tank with a UVC bulb in the pipe and it will kill all fungus, bugs, bacteria) it will also kill your plants quick and give you skin cancer at best if used in your room.

UVB is the one used for sunbeds and reptile tanks, plants dont like it and produce THC to protect themselves (sweeeet). I have 2X23" reptile tubes in my room, be warned tho, prolonged exposure will give you a sun tan, but looking at it is similar to looking at the sun, and will burn your eyes out real fast (and we all know how stoners will stare at pretty lights for a looong time) it also carries a risk of skin cancer.

UVA is the one used in nightclubs-'blacklights', plants dont mind it at all, it does you no harm and is generaly similar to no light whatsoever. However, since reading this I'm begining to wonder..

Blacklights make white glow, what would a plant look like under one without any other light? Perhaps it may show bugs, disease, fungs or general plant illness BEFORE I would normaly see it, giving me a chance to apply whatever remedy is needed.

Think I'll try one
