Re: How to: Cheap, Easy, Efficient - DIY Carbon Scrubber

Nice dude!

You only really need to fill that carbon up a couple inches or so, so that container should last you a little while.

Also make sure you've got a fan that will push through the carbon, preferably over 80 cfms.

Looks like you're golden dude, happy growing!

Right on, thanks again!

The fans are each 80cfm, so 160cfm total. It never occured to me before, but now that I am pushing through actual carbon instead of just an air filter, I hope they will keep up! I guess if worse comes to worse I can always upgrade to bigger fans. Hopefully I won't have worry about that though. We'll see!

Thanks again!

Re: How to: Cheap, Easy, Efficient - DIY Carbon Scrubber

Great tutorial. I'll be making one in the next month or so. I'm going to throw some ideas out here to get feedback on hope you dont mind.

What about coffee filters? Put some activated carbon in the filter then set another filter on top and glue them together, shove it in the can, assuming the sizes are right that the sizes are right that it fits tightly.

Same idea except with cheese cloth or pantyhose too. It keeps the carbon contained so after you make them changing them out every 2 months is easy.

My goal is to make it without having to buy anything but the carbon. When I do it I will get back to you. lol

Re: How to: Cheap, Easy, Efficient - DIY Carbon Scrubber

Mine uses aluminum screen and pantyhose.

I tried pantyhose alone once, but the carbon just ends up sagging out the bottom. The aluminum screen is to keep it's shape.

All in all, 20 bucks to save your ass from the neighbors is a pretty good deal.

Re: How to: Cheap, Easy, Efficient - DIY Carbon Scrubber

I'm running a 6' x 24" x 36" grow space with a 400w hps. My fan is an inline 200cfm. I tried this out but could only fill up the bottom with about an inch of charcoal. It raised the temperature in my cabinet from 78 degrees to 90 degrees. This filter would probably work great for a setup that is not running higher wattage lights. Nice idea though!

Re: How to: Cheap, Easy, Efficient - DIY Carbon Scrubber

This DIY scrubber looks perfect for my setup and I plan on building one soon. I do have a question however. I will be doing a small grow (1-2 plants) in a basement closet that is about 10 x 4 x 9. It is mainly free of light leaks (some small cracks etc) and i have closed those off with black and white plastic. I hope to cut a 4 inch hole in one wall and use an inline fan connected to your DIY scrubber that is hanging on the outside of the closet.

Will that be sufficient for ventilation and smell control? I plan on using a 400w HPS. Its nice and cool down there (never over 62 F over the past week, day or night) so I don't expect heat to be an issue. My main concerns are smell and air flow.

Thanks again for the post and idea.

Try setting it up with the fan pulling air through the scrubber, if at all possible.

I would also suggest another fan pushing in air through the intake.

From my experiments, I've found that pulling air opposed to pushing air through the carbon helped with the airflow.
