Good call trying to get away from the "bad element". I'd prefer never to set foot off my property with anything illegal, which is why I got started on this hobby last year. It's not too complicated, but getting things going can be a little overwhelming. There's a lot of advice on these forums, and not all of it is good advice. When you read, make mental notes of who actually knows what they're doing and try to listen to their stuff when you see their avatars. (No offense to most of the people on this forum... I'm just trying to give some more good advice.)
Your question is pretty broad, so here's a broad answer: You need a grow box, a light, a fan, a carbon filter, and grow stuff (pots, dirt, nutrients). You probably have enough space in there, as long as you meant "2-1/2 feet wide", not "2-1/2 inches wide". ![]() Box - Does it need to be disguised as something that it's not? Or does it just have to be mostly light/air tight? Check your local hardware or department stores for boxes you can use. I got mine at Lowe's for $12.00. Be creative... It all starts with the box. Light - Decide what lights you want to use. Probably CFLs or a small HPS. There's plenty of advice around here for CFL grows, like how many, what wattage, etc. Small HPS lights are probably better, but there's a little electrical work to do. For that space, a 70w or 150w HPS converted security light would probably work. Fan - At minimum, you need a fan that sucks enough air through & out of the box to keep it cool. A second fan inside to move air around the plants isn't a bad idea. Probably two computer fans would be enough, but it depends on your carbon filter. Carbon Filter - Figure out a way to exhaust your air through activated charcoal or a store-bought air filter of some sort. There are a million ways to do this. Grow stuff - Dirt is probably easier than hydro: If you put dirt in a pot, you can grow plants. Hydro requires air pumps and water changes and constant monitoring. Also, buy a pH test kit, because you'll need it. Nutrients can be either hydro-store stuff or Walmart stuff. Ask around for advice on what to use. Also, get a thermometer. The $5 digital at Walmart keeps records of daily "highs and lows", which is worth knowing. Generally, start by acquiring the box. Everything else is built around the box, so it's hard to give advice when the actual "grow room" doesn't exist yet. Here's my box, which cost about $170.00 total (not counting seeds). It would, by the way, fit neatly into your closet. What a coincidence! These were all grown from seed under a 150w HPS. (The picture is old, BTW). Potted in 100% FFOF soil, fed with FF nutrients. I don't think it can get any simpler than this: http://forum.grasscity.com/attachmen...3&d=1200976139 I guess PM me if you have any questions! (I'm not on this board very often) I'm not an expert, but I could talk ANYONE through repeating what I did. |
